Understand the 3 phases/models of human communication, and how we know that a message is effective.
Symbols convey meaning through words, gestures, and visual cues.
Be clear on the definitions of the source, encoder, decoder, messages, channel and noise. Walk yourself through the communication as transaction process and understand these pieces and their role.
Interpersonal, intrapersonal, and impersonal communication.
Synchronous vs. asynchronous communication & mediated communication.
Chapter Two:
As humans, we are what sociologist Derek Layder describes as both social and psychological beings & how we create a symbolic sense of self.
Abraham Maslow defines the matrix of competence and consciousness in 4 quadrants that describe self-awareness and the level at which we operate in different situations. Review and understand each of these quadrants.
Recall the 3 step process of perception and what is perception checking.
The 2 dimensions of our messaging: Content cues vs. Relational cues
Self-Image, Self-Concept, and Self-Esteem
Chapter 3:
Define language and understand the power of words; particularly trigger words that may evoke emotion.
Compare denotative meaning vs. connotative meaning, as well as the continuum of abstract vs. concrete words and their effectiveness within our language.
There are 2 specific ways words are misused, that may impact how meaning is misinterpreted: using polarization to emphasize words or phrases, and bypassing statements that are misunderstood. Review these definitions.
Compare and contrast sexist language, heterosexist language, and homophobic language.
Chapter Four:
Non-verbal communication is communication other than written or verbal symbols that we use to construct meaning for someone else.
