Middle School Curriculum
In order to be an effective middle school educator, it is imperative to understand the developmental complexity of young adolescents. Students aged ten to fifteen experience irregular personal changes that call for certain needs. Not only are students at this age diverse in their backgrounds, but also they are also diverse in their development. During the middle school years, young adolescents experience a number of intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and moral changes. Middle schools need to be developmentally responsive meaning that they need to consider the particular nature of students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade while making school decisions. Young adolescents are extremely vulnerable and susceptible to outside influences. Often environment and media define acceptable behaviors for students and provide a basis for their moral constructions. Since all students are subject to unpredictable and diverse experiences, not all of the moral constructions students make are well informed. This is why it essential that I, as an educator, take responsibility for the moral development of students. I should provide students with opportunities to discuss moral issues through advisor/ advisee programs. I must also deliver curriculum in a way that objectively educates students in order to help them form positive moral …show more content…
It is crucial that students feel safe, supported, and invited in their learning environments. To create this kind of community, every student should have an adult advocate to meet their particular needs and guide their overall development. If the school does not offer these programs, I need to take the responsibility to make sure students have time set aside where they can seek guidance and I can also work toward establishing a new program at that school. It is my duty to serve as an advocate to every student in the school and make sure that they are receiving the proper guidance that is required. I can achieve this through my own personal interactions with students or through references to guidance counselors. It is also my responsibility to work with social service workers and home school coordinators to help every child meet their full

    Although this stage was considered inferior in developmental importance compared to other, more drastic stages, recently research has shown the value in the progressions that are experienced during this stage (Eccles, 1999). This stage cover ages six to eleven as they expand on the complexity of their emotional comprehension, socialization, and cognitive development (Vernon, 2010). This stage provides a sense of stability that is later lost in the Adolescence stage, which helps to nurture the growth and change that they experience, as well as provides a foundation from which the developments in adolescence expound. A key principle of this stage is socialization and the development of a more complex individual identity (Education Encyclopedia, n.d.). Also, awareness of place in society and a sense of belonging develop as individuals in Middle Childhood begin to put a greater emphasis on peer groups and the acceptance or rejection that they experience through peer interactions (Graves, 2006). Through these experiences, individuals develop a sense of either industry or inferiority and inadequacy, in relation to the positive or negative ways that they navigate this stage, which can have a profound effect on later adulthood (Eccles, 1999). Children in this stage are beginning school, which dramatically changes their environment and social interactions from family and the home to peers and external authorities (Vernon, 2010). These changes provide opportunities for children to build healthy peer relationships, comprehend cultural values, and begin to develop roles within their social system that will influence the way that they interact with society throughout the rest of their lifespan.
