Mikayla – African dance

African dance is extremely musical based, each step flows a beat. It is usually performed ritually, normally at coming of age ceremonies, weddings and anniversaries. It is similar to Aboriginal dance with the way it is choreographed and the movements. African dance isn’t performed in one particular part of Africa, it is performed all over Africa, just with each part of Africa having different variations of the dance.
The costumes used in African dance are quite flamboyant, using lots of reds, yellows and blacks, because African dance is a very earth connected dance style, the costumes include a lot of earthy colours. The costumes are of a medieval style, we know this from the design of the dress as they have square necks and tight fitting wrist length sleeves much like the dresses that were worn in that time period. The dresses reach ankle length on each of the dances and have a fitted torso with a dropped v-waist which then falls into a slightly gathered, loose material lower half which flows down from the waist to the ankle. In this piece I believe it is important for the dresses to be fitted on the arms and torso area as these are the main areas of which are used in the contact work such as lifts- and it then makes it easier to perform these moves as dancers can get a better grip on each other. There are also many intricate arm and hand movements where dancers have to intertwine with each other- therefore the tight fitting arms ensure that the moves can be performed with clarity and precision.…

Not all of the folklorico dancers wear long thick skirts to make skirt tricks. Each costume from each region represents that particular region by containing things they would wear and things that characterize that region, in other words the region’s heritage. For example, in the region of Nuevo Leon, German and ranching heritages arise. This is represented through the costume by including cowboy hats, boots (the color could be either black or white), shorter skirts up to the knee, and even fringe on the male costumes.
