Mike Rose Hairdressers
Mike Rose interviewed people with everyday, blue-collar
jobs in The Mind at Work. His chapter on hairdressers is particularly eye opening. To be sure, hairdressers need to acquire a set of technical skills—for cutting, coloring, and styling hair. And many, perhaps most of them, see what they do as requiring a
fair amount of creativity. But what makes the job meaningful, I think, is the skill they acquire in interacting with clients. What does a client mean when she says she wants this haircut a little “fresher”? How do you talk a client out of a haircut that looks great on the long, angular face of the model whose photo she has brought in but will look terrible on the client’s pumpkin-shaped face? How do you help clients feel good about their

As young college students we often have jobs that are customer service oriented. We can all relate to what Quentin Schultze is saying in the section “Putting Our Hearts into Our Stations” we he says “My first paid job was cleaning and restocking shelves in a family drugstore. After one week, I had mastered the work and grown bored (Schultze 37).” This is so relatable to me. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I’ve been working since the early age of 14 and even before then I helped out my mother with her business and my grandparents at their farm. My very first job outside of my family was as an office aid at a human resource department, I felt very lucky being so young, surrounded by adults in their fancy suits. Little did I know the title office aid…

Mike Mayo, an influential analyst with a history of being controversial believes that Citigroup (Citi) is too aggressive in its accounting for deferred tax assets, and should take a write down against them because the firm has operated unprofitably for three consecutive years. A Deferred Tax Asset (DTA) is an asset on the balance sheet that may be used to reduce income tax in a future period. DTAs result from net operating losses and timing differences, but can only be recorded if it is determined that there is more than a 50 percent probability that the company will have future income sufficient to realize the value (Srinivasan and Kaser 2012). The write down, or valuation allowance, would be a signal of poor expected future performance and would wreak havoc on Citi’s stock. Mike Mayo is incorrect in his assessment of Citigroup’s accounting for deferred tax assets because Citi has high likelihood of future profitability, within the time constraints for realization, and substantial capital to meet the regulatory capital requirements.…

After reading Peter Cappelli article “Why focusing too Narrowly in College Could Backfire” I started to think about my own educational goals and why I chose to be a hairstylist. When I graduated from high school I attend beauty college, at that time the beauty industry was booming. There was a salon on every corner. There was always walk- ins and new clients available for stylist. Now with the social media craze like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, the African American salon business has fallen because social media outlets. These outlets, teach ordinary people how to do their own hair, and caused stylist to lose clients. We also have the natural hair movement, that took clients that would normally come into the salon for hair weaves and relaxers, and are now wearing their hair in its natural state and don’t need the salon anymore. Another major down fall to African American salon industry was manufacturing companies like L’Oréal and Shea moisture that promotes salon quality products on YouTube for the naturalista. These were a few major changes that happen in…

    Why Cosmetology

Firstly, my choice to be a Cosmetologist has been an on-going interest of mine since I was about four years old. At that time , when I was four years old, I was in the bath at my Aunt Rhoda’s backwoods farm house. She had heard a gunshot , so she went to check where the gun shot had come from. When doing so , she had left her razor for shaving her legs on the bathtub shelf. I grabbed it, being the curious child I was, and shaved off my eye brow. Another reason I chose to be a Cosmetologist is because when I was about 7 years old my parents bought me tons of Barbie dolls to play with and ruin. One day when we were at Toys ‘R’ Us I saw a huge Barbie doll head without a body that you could do her hair. So as most kids my age , I begged them to buy it for me., but they ended up buying me two of them one for Christmas and one for my birthday. After I got the dolls I played with them almost every day and attempted to braid their hair. I also washed their hair when I was in the bath tub. That is one reason why I chose to be in Cosmetology at ICTC.…
