What are the safe working practices and procedures to be followed when preparing and using the milling machines?
When operating a Milling machine there are a lot of health and safety laws that have to be followed when preparing to use and using a milling machine, the laws and safety precautions that must be taken are as follows:
Gloves or hand wear must never be worn whilst working on a milling machine; any types of hand wear like watches, bracelets and bangles could get snagged on the cutter and wind the operator into the machine and cause injury.
Component and cutting tool must be properly clamped.
Machine vice handles must be removed from the vice when not in use.
Make sure there are no loose parts left on the machine whilst operating.
Make sure that you know how to operate the machine before switching it on.
Machine guards must be put in position while operating.
Keep hands away from any rotating objects.
Cutters being used should be correctly ground and in good condition.
Use correct cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut from time to time.
Spilled oil or cutting fluid on the floor must be wiped up immediately.
Never leave any running machine unattended.
COSHH- Control of substances hazardous to health, when using a milling machine all chemicals that are being used need to be used safely and in a sensible manner, training for these substances should be provided by the employer for safe use of chemicals, a substance folder should be within the workplace at all times and state the chemicals within the workplace ,their uses and effects or injury that can be caused from them
HASAWA - Health and Safety at work act, this protects all employees and employers, it states that the employer must provide all employee with the correct PPE for the tasks
