1. ACT is all about mindfulness and learning how to be in the present moment. J is continuously thinking everything she has worked for to become and stay sober will come crashing down. What would you do to help J stop projecting future negativity and become more hopeful? It seems J has made some huge behavioral changes lately and developed an attitude surrounding herself she may not have had before. Additionally, she seems to enjoy the "new" J. Her self-confidence and ability to remain substance free has not become a solidified part of her personality yet. I would believe this is normal and the longer she sticks with sobriety and utilizing the skills to remain sober, the greater her confidence in herself will become. Many rehab facilities do not consider relapse as a failure, but as a part of the stages of change process. I am curious to ask if she is still using cannabis? I know it takes a long time to develop a new habit, but I question how often she actually practices meditation, mindfulness, and being in the moment. The techniques would have to be practiced as often throughout the day as possible to make the shift from focusing on the future to accepting and being in the present. Have you had her make a list of all her strong suits and positives? She sounds like she does not believe she has many. Consequently, a lot of the characteristics she does notice, appear to be perceived as negative. If she makes a list of her strengths and then a contrasting list of things she perceives as weaknesses, she could have an opportunity to build herself up and accept the parts of herself she perceives as negatives.
