Minimum Wage Vs Poverty

We often hear United States to be a land of opportunity. Where everyone, if they work hard can have a better life. People can have employment that can lead to success and financial stability. Where newer generations can have a better outcome than the previous generation. Yet, we can see how hard working people struggle from poverty. According to Martin Luther King, Jr, “All labor has worth. It is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wages. It is criminal to have people working on a full-time basis and a full-time job getting part-time income”. Martin Luther King, Jr. When we think about the time that we first applied for our first job, we are so excited because we’re thinking when we get the job we can afford everything.
Anyone can move out with their parents’ house, pay rent, can hang out with friends and pay for their own bills.
We got the job, got our wage, look at it with an awe realizing how little we got in our hand. Telling ourselves, we work so hard with all those hours yet the wage that we got is not enough. Minimum wage cannot give the luxury of life that we expect. As stated in Merriam Webster dictionary, minimum wage is the lowest wage permitted by law or by a special agreement. Some jobs need to start to get paid with a minimum wage. It is the amount that an employer can pay to a new worker depending on their skill level. People sometimes who didn’t graduate college, do not have the right skill, do not have enough experience only settled with minimum wage. Because of this, people need to find more jobs in order to survive. . Though increasing minimum wage have advantages, it also comes with disadvantages. It is always a debate whether increase of minimum wage can be a benefit or a drawback to most of the
people.
