In addition to the rocky geographical features, Minnesota has many distinct and unique regions.
One region is the Superior Uplands. It is in the Northern Point of the state. It covers most of the upper parts of Minnesota. It is the most rugged part of the state. Almost anywhere you go, you will see jagged rocks which you will want to stay far away from. But beneath the region, there are rocks that have been piled on top of each other that can be more than a billion years old! There is even an old core of the North American continent. Valuable metals can be found such as iron and copper. One sensational place to visit inside the Superior Uplands is the Northwest Angle. It is an indentation of land that is along the northern Minnesotan border. It contains the Lake of the
Woods.
Another spectacular place to visit are the Young Drift Plains. It is the largest region in Northern, Central, Western, and Southern Minnesota. It is huge! The region is called the Young Drift Plains because, there used to be glaciers in the area, and when they shifted, they left something called drift. Not only the drift, but the lakes there are prodigious. Lake Agassiz is an ancient lake that covers little parts of the region. The lake is more than 140,000 square miles big. It covers a large portion of the northern part of Minnesota, and even a part of Canada. It is bigger than all of the Great Lakes combined.
The state has a very diverse topography to. The elevation of the state is very high and the mountains are very herculean. One mountain range are the Sawtooth Mountains.
History
It all started with the Native Americans. The Ojibwes were a group of Native Americans who were particularly new to Minnesota. They were original from the east but they slowly moved to Minnesota in the 1600s. One group of Natives called the Dakotas didn’t accept them, and that led to many conflicts occurring between them. Though the Ojibwes won over Dakota land and the Dakotas were forced to move mostly south towards the prairies. But really, the reason the Ojibwes moved to Minnesota was based on a prophecy of some sort. The prophecy said to move west until they “find food growing on water”. In Minnesota they found wild rice growing on water specifically rivers. They knew by heart that this will be their new home.
The Dakotas , who now lived on the prairie, got used to their new home. They built tepees near small rivers . They hunted large animals, like bison and buffalo. They ate their meat and used animal hides for cloaks and and blankets. They also used animal hide for shelter. Lots of other animals were hunted like ducks otters and fish. The Dakotas had many resources. They adapted incredibly fast. They harvested corn, pumpkin, black beans and various types of melons. Maple trees also grew in the area.
