Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2(MMPI-2) The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 is a diagnostic personality test. The test is making inferences about the client’s typical behaviors and ways of thinking. This test helps professionals see the severity of diagnoses. It is typically used in a psychiatric setting. This test consists of 567 items and takes up to a ninety minutes to complete. The benefits of this assessment are that it covers a wide range of symptoms and diagnoses. Another benefit is the L scale makes it hard for individuals to fake responses. The limits of this assessment are that it takes a long time to complete. Also, it can be complicating to score and fully understand. Another limit is you have to be licensed to administer the MMPI-2. I did not have any high or alarming numbers. This meant that I do not have a substance abuse problem and I have a low probability of having a substance dependence disorder. If the scores were drastically higher it would indicate and high probability of having a substance dependence disorder.
Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)
The Beck Depression Inventory is an assessment that is used to measure the severity of depression. BDI consist of 21 questions that are on a four-point scale. The scale ranges in severity ranging from zero to three. This takes less than ten minutes to complete. There are benefits of using the BDI. One is that it is easy to take and can be taken in a short time. Another benefit is that it is easy to score and interpret. Also, the questions are easy to understand. A limit of the BDI is it may be easy to lie and hide your depression. It also does not take into consideration someone who is going through a situational depression.     Although I am not specifically criticizing the use of this instrument in the general population, Mississippi’s Supreme Court is making a fundamental error. Had any of these justices or their staff taken the time to consult with any professional experienced in the assessment of people with mental retardation, they could have learned about this test and avoided making a very serious judicial error. The problem arising from these decisions cannot be overstated. First, according to the first paragraph of the introduction in the MMPI-2 manual, this measure is a broad-band test designed to a number of the major patterns of personality and emotional disorders. In the manual Hathaway and McKinley (1989) noted that ‘‘An eighth-grade elementary-school level of reading comprehension is required, as is a satisfactory degree of cooperation and commitment to the task of completing the inventory’’ (p. 1). Here lies the first of the problems with the Mississippi Court’s ruling: People with mental retardation almost never achieve a reading comprehension level (or an oral language comprehension level, for that matter) of that expected of a typical eighth grader. Given this fact, the MMPI-2 is already inappropriate for people with mental retardation; therefore, using it as a method of helping to diagnose the existence of mental retardation is ludicrous.…
