In the last month, the Roanoke office received complaints from four of its most valued clients about the advertising work produced at that branch. I was told that two of the top management personnel, an art director and an account executive, have left the agency with no replacement for these vacancies. Furthermore, the branch is accepting new clients constraining other salaried employees to work longer hours without proper compensation for their overtime. Three of the graphic designers and four of the copywriters have also threatened to quit because they feel that their creative efforts are not appreciated. Consequently, in order to keep our clients and our employees happy and satisfied, we must give our immediate attention to this situation so we can find a solution to this problem.…

I would like to start this report off by saying that I have never been to city council meeting before, even though my father was the mayor, and still serves on city council back in my home town of Kingsford, Michigan. I found this experience both interesting and exhausting to see and understand the scope of the council’s role and responsibilities in keeping this city running. All members of council must have to have a very extensive education and background in finance and public administration even in mid-sized city like Colorado Springs. I couldn’t imagine the business required in a major metropolitan city.…

After the introduction the minutes from the last meeting were read by the group’s treasurer, this was the first role I could identify in the group. The treasurer took the task role of facilitator. After the reading of the minutes the leader asked for comments. One member asked if there could be another vote on changing the meeting time from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm, she started stating why and the treasurer cut her off by saying we put that issue to vote last week and it was passed to remain 5:30. The…

Though this was primarily by design, I found myself somewhat taken aback by the lack of engagement with participants and the way NACAC staff and leadership presented information during the update and assembly preview. For a period of two hours, approximately 9 individuals addressed the audience, during what was largely a massive unload of information, decisions – some of which had only been previously discussed amongst the board, others of which were discussed solely among a few high ranking NACAC leadership staff with little to no input from the greater leadership. One of these decisions was notification to all present that, beginning in 2017, future “collaborative and partnership” meetings such as this one would separate the board, president’s council, and committee chairs. They informed those in attendance that, not only would there not be time to collaborate, but the meetings would not be scheduled in the same month or in the same city because it was too expensive for the association to bring all parties and staff together for a single meeting. Instead, the NACAC leadership staff proposed future planning and collaboration could be done remotely. This top down decision not only failed to take into account the purpose behind the opportunity to collaborate in person with individuals across the country, but also proposed moving one of the meetings from July to the month of November – one of the busiest…

    City Council Meeting

For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…

In summary, this report details the problems encountered with a member of staff working under my management whose attendance standards and working practices had started to slip. The session used was session 4 of Book 2 B120. Despite an appraisal system being in place and frequent discussions being had with the employee his attitude was impacting upon the other members of staff in the department. Using the notes from Book 2 session 4 the problem concepts observed are that no clear instructions had been set and any monitoring system utilised fully to best effect. The recommendations to overcome the issues would have been a structured meeting with the individual followed by better monitoring and reward/praise on follow-up over a monthly or weekly interval. Further support and training for the Manager in charge of the department would have lessened the impact on the whole department.…
