The “Miracle Worker” by William Gibson is about Helen Keller overcoming her blindness and deafness. In 1959 the “Miracle Worker” was published and it was a great hit. In “Miracle Worker” there is a lot of symbolism that readers don't pick up on. Symbolism is when an ordinary objects are actually representing a nother thing. Symbolism gives you a hidden theme in your story. Some symbolism in the “Miracle Worker” is The keys, the doll, and the water. The keys symbolise Kellens mind closing and opening up to take in information. This happened on page 271, when “Helen is turning the key in the lock” of Annie’s bedroom. The doll symbolises Helen. Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Symbols are used throughout literature to further explain a major theme. For instance, Ernest Hemingway uses many symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants”. In Hemingway’s short story, the main characters are a man referred to as “the American,” and a women referred to as just “the girl” and sometimes the nickname jig, both the American and the girl are discussing something important but as the readers we do not know exactly what the two characters are communicating about. Humans can make interpretations. We don’t have to take everything literally; we can see below the surface of events, and we can “read between the lines.” Symbolism is one important tool authors use for conveying meaning “below the surface.” By being able to “read” symbols, the reader can understand the main themes or messages about life that the author is suggesting. Symbols can also clue us in about future events in the plot. Although the ultimate ending of Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” is a shocking…

A symbol is an object, action or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, there are many things that are used for symbolism and some of these things are the animals that are explained throughout the book. During the setting there is a depression where people are getting kicked out of their homes, losing their jobs and having to pick up everything and move to the west in hopes of a better life. Symbols refer to ideas beyond the words, and are used to develop themes by making the reader interpret an idea for him/herself. To Kill A Mockingbird written by harper Lee in 1960 is a prime example of how symbolism can be effectively used to develop a theme. Lee uses many symbols throughout the novel to present thematic ideas to the reader. For example, the symbol of The Mockingbird is used to symbolize moral injustice. This symbol is essential to understanding the message of the book and is even referred to in the title. The mad dog is another important symbol used to represent challenges an individual must face, and the craziness of Maycomb. As a result, Harper Lee uses the symbols of The Mockingbird and The Mad Dog to develop the theme of a society’s moral injustice.…
