Mise In Film
Taking a closer look at one scene, the filmmakers are able to create an authentic look at the two most tumultuous decades of changing in American culture. Specifically, the scene involving Jenny, drug use and her contemplation of suicide (1:29:07-1:31:18) which is completely without dialogue relies heavily on the elements of mise en scene to communicate the mood, message, and tone. It is very compelling and connects the audience. The set design is filled with small details that add to believability and help define the action (the drugs, the hotel room details). The movie is extremely well put together, the props, scene arrangements, camera movements and angles. Even with the film being in black and white the lighting was well played and designed. The mise en scene was laid out, positioned and selected methodically to encase the simplicity but elegant comforts of a stationary life that someone who wants to settle down. The set and setup contains the mundane and dullness of staying put that one would feel who like to be on the go. Not only does mise en scene, lighting, setting, camera movement and location en-capture and speaks to and out for both of the main characters it sets the mood and aids the story to grab its viewer to help them relate.…

From the sound, lighting, camera placement etc. One example of this is the lighting throughout the film, you can see it is very bland, very black and white, to reflect Harold’s lifestyle. Another use of lighting in the film is when the light on his wrist is flared are brightened to show the significance of the watch to him and the story. Many of the shots in the movie are simple and still, especially towards Harold to show the simplicity of his life. The colors in the film also have a big reflection on the character’s attitude and emotions. For example the color’s in Harold’s house and work are very dull and stale to reflect his emotions and his basic personality. Another example is the bakery, which is much more colorful to show the baker’s aggressive personality. Another example is the colors in Dale’s home, they are very bright and energetic to show that the changing character and emotion of Harold. Music also shows the setting of the characters, with the music throughout…

The connection made between the movie and the lecture and reading from the class, it is obvious that mise-en-scene is used extensively to the plot or basis of the movie. Unlike other films where the staging or the background is a part of the narrative, Pleasantville’s main theme for the viewer to be entranced by the sudden burst of colors that eventually fill up the screen more rapidly and enable the viewer to experience the movie more vividly. One example of scenes in the movie that are influenced by mise-en-scene is when the brother and sister are transported to Pleasantville; David becomes aware right away because everything is in black and white. That part of the mise-en-scene is what is called lighting. It is the combination of style and color that the director inserted in the film so the viewer knows that the siblings were transported to Pleasantville. Another example is the use of costume and wardrobe. The distinction between the real world and Pleasantville is contrasting and the director specifically did that aspect of mise-en-scene to let the viewer’s know that David and Jennifer have left home and arrived in Pleasantville.…

The movie is shot mostly from “the office” which is actually Alonzo’s car. The day is dark and gloomy which puts a nice touch to what is going on in the movie. Watching the movie makes the audience feels like as if they are there in person. The spots they picked to shoot the movie also really show what the drug world would look and feel like. It makes the movie so hard to stop watching.…

    5. One important use of camera angles. - The directors also used the camera to add to the mise en scène of certain sequences such as the shots when Dorothy is clicking the ruby slippers together and saying, "There’s no place like home." The shot is long in duration and is a close up on Dorothy. The lens slightly blurs the focus and then eventually overlays three images together: Dorothy's face, her ruby slippers, and a starburst-like pattern. This helps add to the idea that Dorothy is crossing back into the real world from the dream world.…

The use of mise-en -scene in this clip shows us the negative stereotypes of these people. The women are portrayed as shallow as they are covered in orange fake tan, have massive false eyelashes and false nails. This make us see that the all they are self absorbed and obsess over how they look. This reflects negatively on the characters as we think they only care about appearance and nothing else.…

Coming from the theatre, the term mise-en-scene refers to literally everything the audience gets to see when watching a film. It is the mixture of props, lighting conditions, the cast and the medium they develop their action in. It is all about creating a specific visual display the stories are going to take place in. Goodfellas (1990) presents a well-defined scheme in terms of mise-en-scene as it recreates the United States of the seventies: the american culture of the time is flawlessly portrayed by the use of all the tools we just mentioned. The actors play such an important role in the creation of this atmosphere (as well as their clothings), and it is not just their appearance but also the way the act and speak what makes Goodfellas such a reliable piece.…

This was the first play or theatre performance that I have attended. I was unsure of what to expect, but I heard great things about this play. Furthermore, the first aspect of this production that caught my attention was the design of the set. The design gave the feeling of a run down urban neighborhood by making the outer parts of the stage look like an old brick building. The building looked like one you would find in a low-income area or projects. The scenery of the play set the stage for what type of production this would be. I especially liked the way they carefully chose not to place just any kind of props on the stage. The dusty floor, old couch, and the mattress for a bed made the apartment look worn and rundown. This play showed some very realistic designs for the time period and life of some low-income individuals struggling to make a living or hustle. This is especially true when Lincoln pointed out that Booth had no running water and he felt that he was in a third world country. I was impressed by how they were able to make the apartment appear so old and the items in it seem battered. I really thought I was peeking into a real bedroom not just a set. Also, the way the set was designed it makes sure that the individual watching the play is focused on the stage and the characters. There is not a point in the play where my eyes left the stage or the actors.…

In the beginning of the movie, when we are learning first about Charles Kane, it shows him dressed to the hilt in a very nice suit. This gave the audience the impression that he was a very powerful and important person. It also showed that he was a very wealthy person. The movie also used a wardrobe choice to express in a scene that the characters were hardworking individuals without saying so. When they first start working at the newspaper company, it shows the characters all with their shirt collars unbuttoned and bowties untied. This detail made me understand that these men had been hard at work and had been tired of working a long day. This choice in their attire helped me perceive something extra in the scene besides just seeing that they were at the office. This was a relevant detail that I retained in the scene that helped me understand what was going on in the film…

When someone asks you what your favorite movie is, what goes through your mind? When someone asks me that question, I instantly think of specific scenes from my favorite film that induce a strong emotional response. This seems to happen when thinking about any movie I particularly like. What makes these scenes so memorable that they still emit those same emotions when just thinking about them? The answer is mise-en-scene – the visual story that is being told through setting, costumes and makeup, lighting, and staging. Bordwell and Thompson inform us, “Elements of mise-en-scene accentuate action and engage attention…Many of our most vivid memories of movies stem from mise-en-scene” (pg 112). The film Jurassic Park (1993) is a great example of how mise-en-scene can shape our experience of the film through specific components such as setting, lighting, and costuming.…

An example that’s introduced in part of this realism is Freudian Psychology, which allows the viewer to think about sex without showing the actual act. Another aspect of realism is using real amateur actors and real locations within the film. As if real context isn’t enough, mirroring the changing social, ethnic and gender differences in America further helped show realism in this genre of film. One major element of Social Realism is the development of themes, which is the opposite of “Hays Office Production Code.”…
