Primal fear – phobia case study!

Trevor: * Fear of heights * Trevor goes to Germany to try a controversial therapy called ‘flooding’ which forces patients to confront their fears head on with no chance of escape. * He’s a builder but his phobia makes it impossible for him to work on any structure more than 1 story high. * In ‘flooding’ they take the patient’s biggest phobia and try to expose them to it in the most massive way, so the exposure is massive and immediate. * In Trevor’s case they make him climb to the top of the biggest steeple in the town, with no chance of escape. * In his therapy the doctor tries to teach Trevor that fear reaches a climax and can’t go on indefinitely. * They then take him to and even higher place and attempt to get him to lean over the window and he does, but not for very long, he then gets put up in a firetruck’s ladder and he stays up at a great height for a little while. * However, he begins to become better at dealing with his phobia, but has not yet conquered it.

Jackie: * Fear of birds/feathers * Has had fear as long as she can remember * When she was a girl she visited her g/ma’s house and found herself in a room with a trapped bird which petrified her and traumatized her. * Jackie decides to confront her worst fear using a different type of therapy – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). * He starts by creating a fear hierarchy and exposing Jackie to the lowest fear-inducing stimulus, the feather asking her to rate where he fear is on a scale of 1 to 100. * So in this therapy, the aim is to show them that fear peaks, and to show them by constantly exposing them to worse and worse fearful stimuli that fear will eventually peak and go down, which teaches them to be in control of their fear. * Jackie’s therapy did work and she is now able to spend time with her daughter anywhere without the fear of a bird attack.

Ryan: * Loves roller-coasters and bungee

The birds first develops nascence and start attacking Melanie Daniels when she first arrives at Bodega Bay. Before she arrives to the small town, Melanie acts saccharine to Mitch because she thinks he appears handsome and poses as a pet shop employee.1 After dropping Love Birds off at Mitch Brenner’s house, the narcissist sets the birds down on a table, and quietly and unnoticeably leaves. She completes this so she surprises Mitch and Cathy, his dainty little sister, for the girl’s birthday.3 When returning to the boat, “…a bird attacks her head. The attack leaves a small cut on her forehead” so the laceration is easily treated after (Hunter 11). The seagull unexplainably attacks Melanie, which appears as the first bird attack to exist in Bodega Bay. When Melanie debates to go to Cathy’s birthday party, she decides to finally go. Melanie acts reluctant to attend Cathy’s birthday party because she does not want to intrude the party, she knows Lydia seems jealous, therefore does not want to abase her, and the only reason to go is to be with the man she met recently, Mitch.5 When Melanie finally goes, Cathy aims to hit a piñata when “A bird becomes aggressive and flies into Cathy while she is blindfolded” (Hunter 26). When Melanie decides to go to the party, she and Mitch talk and see seagulls coming towards the children, so she facilitates them and brings them to safety. One day, Lydia decides to visit her friend, Dan. When Lydia Brenner decides to visit Dan, “…she proceeds into the kitchen, and notices chipped tea cups, and proceeds into the house. She walks down the hallway and looks into Dan’s bedroom. She sees a…

“Behavior therapy aim to increase people’s skills so that they can have more options for responding. By overcoming debilitating behaviors that restrict choices, people are freer to select from possibilities that were not available to them earlier, which increases individual freedom. People have the capacity to choose how they will respond to external events in their environment, which makes it possible for therapists to use behavioral methods to attain humanistic ends” (Corey, 2013, p.…

    | This law has been put in place to protect everyone in the setting, not only in childcare settings but in every work place. It is crucial that practitioners put this legislation into place as it makes everyone in the setting safe and it ensures everyone’s safety. The act makes sure that the maintenance of the work place and the people in it are protected against risks to health and safety arising out of or in connection with the activities of persons at work. ‘An Act to make further provision for securing the health, safety and welfare of persons at work, for protecting others against risks to health or safety’ http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1974/37.In most childcare settings toys/products bought by them must have the BSI kitemark sign or the CE mark, this ensures that the toys/products the children are using are safe to play with and meet the legal requirements that are needed for them to be allowed to be used ‘Many products such as toys must meet legal requirements before they can be sold within the European Union and must carry a CE mark. This shows that the product meets European rules.’(Tassoni.P pg.140). When I go to my placements for the first time they always ask to see my CRB this shows them that I am safe to work with and be around children. In child care settings it is your employer who has a duty of care to look after you and others, as far as possible, your health, safety and welfare while you are at work. They should start with a risk assessment to spot possible health and safety hazards. But this is a team effort and if a risk arises you must report it immediately. These are done to help keep children safe from any possible harm.…

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), as its name suggests, blends the theoretical insights of both the behavioural and cognitive therapies. CBT’s origins can be dated back to Stoic, Taoist and Buddhist philosophies which link human emotions to thoughts and ideas (Beck et al, 1979). Modern CBT is psychologically based and historically can be linked to behavioural theories such as those developed by Pavlov (Classical conditioning, 1927) and Skinner (Operant conditioning, 1938). Learning theories also focused on how new learning occurs to provide associations between a ‘stimuli’ and a ‘response’ (Westbrook et al, 2011). Behavioural Therapy (BT) proved particularly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders, particularly with specific phobias. However BT did not recognise the importance of the patient’s internal thoughts in relation the maintenance of the distress, and was proved to be ineffective in the treatment of depression (Fennell, 1999). It was in the 1960’s that treatment for depression was revised and ‘cognitive therapy’ was devised.…
