Maria W. Stewart gave a very powerful lecture in Boston in 1832. In 1832 it may of been hard to associate the atributes of educator and writer with an African American however an African American educator and writer is exactly was Ms. Stewart was. Her desperate and emotional tone conveys her position on equality beween whites and blacks. Her plea for the equal treatment and equal oppertunity for both african americans and whites is helped by her expert use of language, unarguable evidence, and pure raw emotion to craft this message.…
The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The United States of America is a giant melting pot of several different races, ethnicities, and cultures. What I have learned is that each group has their differences and similarities. With these differences in culture they have taught me how to be tolerant and accepting of them no matter how different from me they appear. By accepting the differences in our diverse society I have learned new thoughts and ideas of living, different perspectives of thinking, and have been introduced to a variety of foods that I have never tried before. All in all, it seems in the end that many racial and ethnic groups are different, but they share one common interest which is to love one another and be happy. The most beneficial thing to our society would be the focus on the main interest of all, instead of focusing on how different we are when compared to one another. Focusing on the differences between one another and judging others based on them was something that was done in the past. However, I had come to realize that focusing on the differences and closing the opportunity to learn about other cultures, races, and ethnicities was hindering me in life.…
The specific topic of this book is the oppression of women. Its overall purpose is to understand the women behind the veils and why the Muslim women take up the hijab. The purpose is also to show how political, religious, and cultural factors shape the women’s lives. It is written for the average westerner because they have been exposed to more negative and one-sided views about the religion, however they are clueless about what really goes on in the religion of Islam, which concludes that there are many stereotypes and judgments on the subject. Brooks is probably used to this because she was raised in Australia as a Jew. Knowing about the Jewish background and how they were discriminated against could have been an important factor in the writing of Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women. New York Times reports that “She wanted to avoid the many judgments and assumptions, but add a valid account of the women in the Muslim world.”…

Despite the assumption that the United States has attained full democracy, there are still many incidences of biases. The main motive for Banaji Mahzarin R. to write the book was to bring to light the biases that people keep in their minds or brains as well as showing how those bits of knowledge about individuals and about their skin color, education, age, and religion can manipulate behavior.…
In the video”What’s it like to be Muslim in America” by Dalia Mogahed “Muslims are inventors, teachers, first responders and olympic athletes, but some make the muslims look bad on the negative things they do” (Mogahed) what I mean is that no matter how much nice successful Muslims there are, there is always Muslims that make themselves look bad. For example, on the 9/11 attack, some muslims were disappointed because it’s just making the rest of the muslim people look bad. Also, some muslims were afraid to go outside because of how other people will think of them. I personally think bad about the Muslim people because of what occurred and I know I’m no one to judge others by their appearances or looks. It just scares me on what they did…
Due to the time constraints and commercial realities of many news organisations the frequent use of race is a way of creating a quick, common understanding of a normal us' to a strange or different them'. The power to influence attitudes, whether intentional or not, can result in the media legitimizing prejudice through the linking of ethnicity to various often unrelated negative events.…
When she was 5 years old, she began to do ballet lessons. Her mother wanted her to understand that there’s natural rhythm in the voice. The fluctuations of ballet music and movement helped her grasp that. With her talent and extensive training, Heather was good enough to become a professional dancer. But the professional dancer gets meager paychecks and would have to live with her mother. She wanted to be independent. At the next pageant, Miss Jacksonville State University, she was upfront about being deaf. She asked the judges to speak slowly and they accommodated her. She won the 1992 Miss Jacksonville State University title and went on to be 1st runner up to Miss Alabama 1992, Kim Wimmer. The following year she won the Miss Point Mallard competition and once again, placed 1st runner up to Miss Alabama, Kalyn Chapman. After she became Miss America, she showed much dedication to the Deaf Community by serving on the executive board for the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. She helped establish a multimedia public service campaign to help identify early hearing loss. She was also a spokesperson for the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation and the Starkey Hearing Aid Foundation. Now, she is married to a guy named John McCallum. She met him while he was working for the Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich in Washington DC and they didn’t start dating seriously until a month after she gave up her title, and then soon after that they got engaged. They got married on June, 8th, 1996. They have now had two boys and are living in Georgia. I think Heather Whitestone is a great inspiration to the world because she definitely showed everyone that a deaf person can talk, can achieve and is able to do anything. That’s why I admired her so much, because it shows me that any deaf person including me can accomplish…
Miss Maudie Atkinson's house was destroyed in a deadly fire on December 15th. The first snowfall had fallen for the first time since 1885. School was cancelled for the day and the kids spent their day playing outside and building snowmen.…
For the interview project, I interviewed a woman, Mariam Estes, who practices Islam. My interviewee is from Columbus, Ohio and due to her distance, we did a skype call. It went similar as a traditional interview. For me, the interview was not only informative but a learning and educational experience. I learned a lot more from asking her questions than if I would have reading an article or book. Her experiences are unique to her, which is what I found most intriguing. It only took a little bit of preparation to plan for the interview, due to my previous and outlying interest in Islam it was easy for me to think of questions that not only I found interesting but I could easily relate back to the course. Since I previously knew who I was interviewing but, never spoke with her about this topic I…
Any given society relies on newspapers as one of its major source of information and basically sets the tone for the rest of the media on how it should conduct its coverage (Jennifer, 2003). Given this fact, it important to question the way information is presented to the public by journalists. In their endeavor to provide the public with information, journalists reproduce world views that are culturally embedded in a bid to distinguish the significant and the valid (Mikal, 2010). The technique of organization used by journalist to frame their stories is the similar as the one used by everyone daily to create a conversation be it controversial or interesting. Journalists frame information…

In Miss America By Day, Marilyn Van Derbur told her story of incest, that she experienced throughout her childhood. She explained how she was sexually abused by her father, from age 5 to the time she was 18 years old, when she was able to leave her home and go off to college. Marilyn wrote about how her father would come into her room, at least once a week, to molest or rape her. The visits became more frequent when she was a teenager. She would lie awake in her bed, curled up in a tight fetal position, anticipating when he would come into her room and violate her. When he would come in at night, she would pretend she was sleeping throughout the whole defilement. The waiting was very traumatic for her on its own, because even if he didn’t come in a particular night, she still wouldn’t be able to go to sleep or relax her body from the fear of his next “visit.”…
Xenophobia and racism are serious problems that affect many individuals and is caused by many factors. The Americans dislike and distrust towards middle eastern immigrants increased drastically when president Bush declared the full offensive against Islamist terrorist after the events of 9/11 (Gunduz, 2010, p. 35-36). The lack of minority rights for the Muslims in Europe influences the increasing hostility against them because they have no protection (p. 37). Danso & McDonald (2011) stated that the media plays a big role in the increasing cases of xenophobia because some media agencies…
