Relationships are often the most important part of a book. The reader can truly discover the author’s intent for the book through the way the characters grow throughout the story. In this book, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, the relationship between the main character (Jacob) and his grandpa is one that completely shapes the story. Without Abe (his grandpa) in the book, there would be no adventure and no purpose, without Jacob there would be no one to go on the adventure. Although Jacob’s grandpa is only alive for a small portion of the story, it’s as if he is with Jacob throughout his whole quest. The plot of this story is centered on Jacob, setting out on a journey to discover more about his grandfather’s past. Jacob always doubted the crazy stories that his grandfather told him but after he passed away, he realizes that there is more truth to his tales than he once thought. Before Jacob’s adventure began, his life was rather ordinary. He had nothing substantially original about him. His grandfather gave him something to discover, something to be passionate about. While reading the book, it is amazing to me how a character could continue to have so much influence on someone even after they have passed away. What Jacob discovered about himself may not have been simple, and it was certainly far from ordinary, but at least in the back of his mind he knew he wasn’t alone. His grandpa had the same gift, encountered many similar problems, and I believe this gave Jacob the motivation to carry on. Not to mention, knowing someone looking over you can give a feeling of great safety, even in frightening times. Abe gave Jacob an adventure unlike any other.
