Some of the first settlers of the Atchafalaya were the Houma, Opelousa, Tunica-Biloxi, Chitimacha, and the Atakapa Tribes (STU). When the Choctaw settled on the Atchafalaya, they called it the “hacha falaia,” meaning ‘long river.’ Towns around the Atchafalaya were soon founded and New Orleans became the capital of Louisina. All of this played a large role in the Atchafalaya and the culture of it.
The Mississippi River has created the landscape for most of Louisiana. When a landscape is formed or changed due to a water source, or multiple water sources, it is called karst topography. Because of the Atchafalaya River basin, there is very rich agriculture in Louisiana. Many crops are grown and harvested from the rich farmland. The river produces most of the corn, soybeans, wheat, cattle, and hogs grown in the United States (UD). Soil from this area is full of nutrients and other things that are necessary and beneficial to crops. The river has many other streams and rivers that run off into the Atchafalaya.
