GENERAL FORMATTING NOTES

1. All song cues are centered on the page, shown in bold italicized type with style/instrumentation, tempo/meter, and key. Song lyrics are indented. 2. Fan names for unidentified ponies are underlined . These names have been taken from the
Friendship Is Magic wiki ( mlp.wikia.com ). 3. Stage and camera directions are ( italicized and in parentheses
).

4. Notes concerning additional explanation or animation/continuity errors are [ italicized in square brackets
].

5. Rhyming lines are indented. 6. The notation [ sic ] is used to indicate that a particular line is delivered exactly as written, even though it exhibits errors in grammar, pronunciation, etc. 7. After first mention in a transcript, the background pony known as Doctor Whooves is referred to as “Whooves” in stage directions and dialogue tags. Regular medical practitioners are referred to as “Doctor.” 8. Many fanfiction pieces (and the show, as of “Magic Duel”) use the word “alicorn” to refer to the Princesses. I do not follow this practice, as it is incorrect; “alicorn” properly refers to a unicorn’s horn and/or the material that comprises it. Instead, I refer to the
Princesses as winged unicorns.

The following terms are used to describe scene changes and camera movements: ● Fade in/out: Gradual transition to/from a solid color background.
● Snap: Instant change to/from a solid color background.
● Dissolve: Gradual change from one scene to another.
● Cut: Instant change from one scene to another.
● Wipe: Scene changes as if the first scene is being scraped or wiped off the screen, leaving the second one in its place.
● Clock wipe: A wipe in which the edge between scenes rotates as if it were a hand on a clock. ● Barn door wipe:
A wipe that proceeds to or from two opposite edges of the screen, as if a pair of double doors were opening or closing.
● Iris in/out: The view changes as if seen through

Throughout ‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’, Misto uses the shoe-horn as the dominant motif and visual. The shoe-horn is enforced in the name of the play and what it symbolises gives it its importance; however throughout the play its symbolic meaning seems to evolve. Bridie first mentions the shoe-horn in Act 1, Scene 1, where she speaks fondly of it as a gift from her father. “There are three things every young soldier should know. Always use a shoe-horn – it’ll make your boots last longer…” The shoe-horn, for Bridie, represents the joys of home and family, a reminiscence of happiness – a life before the horrors of war. As the play progresses the symbolism of the shoe-horn changes.…

In Europe, horns gained popularity in the trendy sport of hunting. As this aristocratic sport spread, horn-makers experimented with different shapes and sizes to increase the range of notes possible. In 1636, French musical scholar Marin Mersenne wrote of four different kinds of horns in his Harmonie Universelle: Le grand cor (the big horn), the cor à plusiers tours, (the horn of several turns), le cor qui n'a qu'un seul tour (the horn which has only one turn), and le huchet (the horn with which one calls from afar). Horns such as the cor de chasse and trompe de chasse (pictured left) fall into this latter category. Shortly thereafter, the horn began to appear in the concert halls and theaters. Too raucous for inclusion with the fine oboes and violins in the orchestra pit though, at first the hunting horns were used only onstage in scenes depicting, naturally, the hunt.…

Additionally, South goes on to discuss the unicorn’s role in the Garden of Eden, describing how the unicorn and its mate refused to enter the ark. “Some accounts say that the unicorn drowned in the Flood, but others say that he survived by swimming until the waters went down” (South 1987:18). South’s tale is unique because it acts as a reasonable explanation for many people as to why unicorns are not present in the world anymore: they were wiped out by the flood. The religious symbolism of the unicorn did not only impact works of literature. “Late medieval and Renaissance pictures of a virgin holding a slain unicorn on her lap resemble those of pieta- depictions of Mary holding the dead Christ” (Sax 2013:9). Given this information, it is evident…
