Firstly, vulgar lyrics in songs can promote alcohol and drug abuse, sex, and cause anger issues in a person. In many explicit songs, sex is the main factor, and especially on teens, …show more content…
sexual influences are not a good influence. Many of these explicit songs’ lyrics discuss sex and how men are sex driven and how women are objects for men to somewhat use to satisfy their hunger. In these songs, sex is more often portrayed as a good thing than bad, and never shows the possible bad outcomes. STDs, such as AIDS, HIV, and Gonorrhea are all possible outcomes, that could eventually lead to death. That’s not even the worst that these songs may influence children with. Songs that talk about drugs and alcohol being a good thing are also a bad influence on children, as many songs show alcohol and drugs as “cool” and never mention the effects they have on a person. Alcohol is mentioned in music once every 14 minutes, and when it’s mentioned, it’s most often shown as glamorous. Violent music can cause anger, and possibly anger issues in a person. When a person is exposed to violent music they may become angry or have an angrier personality. Becoming angry with this music, or something else because of this music may lead to substance abuse and/or physical abuse.
If a person is influenced by bad music, such as music using suicide with no purpose may lead to that person to develop depression or suicidal thoughts. Songs about or related to suicide often lead to more cases of suicide. When a song is directly related or even just talks about suicide it can influence the person listening to think that suicide is a good option. Especially with songs that talk about suicide with no opinion, such as it being good or bad, should definitely be thought about before being released to the public, as using such a touchy topic with no money can cause some uproar. These type of songs with terrible plots or generally rude things that someone may take personally can also cause a person to be depressed. Depression can be caused by a person’s feelings, whether it’s from a song or from a person themselves. When depression is gained from listening to such terrible music all around us it can lead to suicidal thoughts, allowing these overall terrible plots and rude topics to lead to suicide. Vulgar songs that include suicide mentions are a terrible influence to anyone, depressed or not, young, old, perfectly normal people, or whatever they have or don’t have, these mentions are terrible. When a person is depressed their emotions are uncontrollable, and if anger comes into play, bad things may happen, whether it’s to himself, or to other people. Anger and depression are not a good combination. You never know what a person can take from a song. The third reason to ban vulgar and explicit music is because children are easily influenced by it. Children who are influenced by this music have a tendency to repeat these actions, with or without meaning.
Statistics show that 81.7% of parents have heard their child repeat a vulgar/explicit word without knowing the meaning, 33.4% have seen their child copy a provocative dance move, and 68.6% say the message sent by these songs is flashing your body gets you noticed (Bradby, N/P).
Many songs seem to push children and teenagers to become sexually active too soon (Ackerman, N/P). When a child is influenced by a song, especially if their parents don’t want them to, they want to rebell. This leads to increased sexual activity, substance abuse, and other things that children and teenages should not be doing period. Many people would say that if you don’t want to listen to it, don’t turn it on, meaning if a certain person doesn’t want to hear it, let the people who want to hear it, hear it.
There are two main reason why this statement is not true, the first one being children have access to media in ways their parents may not know.
‘ "Children have access to the media in ways their parents never imagined. In that sense, teenage rebellion is easier than ever before. This media access scares some parents because of the sexually explicit themes, violence and strong language so readily available," ‘ (Ackerman, N/P)
Children can access media in many ways, may it be from a cell phone, their computer, and if you take that away maybe a friend’s computer or phone. Overall, most children can and will find a way to rebel against their parents, and achieving access to something their parents wouldn’t want them having access to, is a win in their book. The second main reason why this statement isn’t true is that there is music all around us. At the mall, there is music playing over the speakers, at some restaurants there’s music playing in the background, certain stores have music playing over the speakers, and depending on the store, this music may be (censored) vulgar or explicit. It’s extremely hard to escape music without going through our daily lives. Simply not turning music on that you don’t want to listen to, isn’t gonna work all the
time.
