I said “That one is a bastard. May God punish that fool”. He had just divorced with his wife not too long ago before buying me at an auction because he lost his job. He kept telling his friends and family that asked after him through the phone that he all was well and he was doing fine meanwhile his anger and heart break had led him into participating in human trafficking. Everything about him was disgusting and I just wish I had gotten a not so disgusting master.

The development and progression of slavery in colonial America is a large part of America’s past addressed in every history text book nation-wide but, as with anything, the story presents itself differently in each one. Two days ago, I had a heated conversation with a Berber man, and not much to my surprise, he refused to accept the very existence of slavery in Mauritania. Apparently, he is one of the masterminds working behind closed doors to keep the system of slavery tightly concealed from the outside world. News reports are cropping up everywhere and yet the Mauritanian government is perpetually remaining reluctant to bring those who are responsible for this practice forward. When the victims of this practice try to speak up they are threatened with deprivation of food, even death.…

Slavery has been a crucial part of society throughout history, a way of life for centuries upon centuries. Only recently was this aspect of civilization questioned as to its validity in an increasingly ‘humane’ society. Since this country was founded, this issue has been the object of prolonged debate and radical opinions. Slavery can be found at the root of several instances of bloodshed and revolution in the course of our nation’s development, a key role in shaping our nation. Though it is outlawed today and the thought of a reality otherwise is now absurd, not even two centuries ago, it played a vital role in over half the nation’s economy and lifestyle.…
