Slaves-to-be entered America on August 20th, 1619 in Jamestown, Virginia. An English warship that pulled into harbor imported slaves to Jamestown. Slaves got punished for small things such as not working as hard as their master thought they should, talking too much, or using their native language. Slaves also got punished for bigger things such as resisting slavery, stealing from their masters, murdering a white man, or trying to run away. Slaves were punished through being forced to wear shackles, being whipped, being chained to the ground, being hung and left to die, and being put in various other contraptions. Many slaves obeyed the rules, but many also gave into temptation. Slaves never got rewards compared to the many punishments that they received. Slaves weren’t allowed to learn to read or write. There are well over 300 rebellions in slave history. The German Coast Uprising was actually one of the closest to succeeding out of all of the rebellions. It was also the most organized. Not all whites in the United States loved slavery. The people in the North were against it and the Quakers assisted slaves in escape. Not all blacks were against slavery either. Some black people owned slaves themselves.
The Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865. During this time, slaves helped fight against the South. On January 31, 1865, Abraham Lincoln had a law passed that slavery was illegal in all of the states. Even after slavery ended, they faced racism for decades and still do today. They got low paying jobs and there were separate fountains for whites and blacks. The discrimination will never fully go away.
In conclusion, slaves had a very horrible life. Many people in America and other parts of the world still hate blacks, but most of the world has come to accept them as human beings. Some people are even trying to help in Africa: their homeland. They are treated as equals in most of the United States. We all look the same under our skin.
