Review Questions 1. What are the differences between being a biological parent, an adoptive parent, and a foster parent?
A biological parent is a parent who has conceived (biological mother) or sired (biological father) whose genes are transmitted to the child. An adoptive parent is a person who adopts a child of other parents as his or her own child. A foster parent is someone who is willing to be assigned a child by the state to take care of. 2. What financial needs are parents obligated to provide and which are optional?
Parents are obligated to provide for a child’s basic economic needs. These economic needs are nutritious food, shelter, clothing, and health care. Optional things that the parent can chose to provide, can be things such as piano lessons, toys and electronics, summer travel, etc. 3. What other needs might a child have that a parent is expected to provide?
Parents are expected to provide to their child’s emotional needs, educational needs, and disciplinary needs. 4. What are the qualities of a nurturing parent?
The qualities of a nurturing parent include properly nurturing themselves, caring for their own personal needs, and maintaining a healthy level of self-respect in order to help the child develop self-esteem. Nurturing parents need to be empathetic to their child, and see the world through their child’s eyes. Nurturing parents need to learn about their child’s personality and interests, by spending time with them. Nurturing parents need to be aware so that they can actively look for ways to effectively enforce disciplinary codes.
Critical Thinking Questions 1. What qualities make a person a good parent? A bad parent?
Qualities that make a person a good parent are being empathetic, caring, selfless and responsible. Qualities that make a person a bad parent are being selfish, irresponsible and lazy. 2. Which parental responsibilities do you think would be the most challenging? Why?
I think that the most challenging parental responsibility would be being selfless, because not everybody would take the shirt off their back for another person. Becoming selfless takes a lot of changing in ways of seeing life differently and you cannot be a good parent if you are not selfless, because your child has to come before you. 3. Which parental responsibilities do you think would be the most interesting to you? Why?
I think that the most interesting parental responsibility would be care for your child in ways of preparing food, and clothing your child. 4. What are some things that people can do to prepare for parenthood?
Some things that people can do in order to prepare for parenthood can be taking classes on parenthood, reading, researching, and getting insight and tips from experienced parents. Another great way to prepare for parenthood is babysitting.
