Today, we few are gathered here to reflect upon the life of a great man – Jay Gatsby. I have not known Gatsby for very long, I only met him recently after becoming his neighbour. Gatsby was extremely generous, ambitious and good hearted.
To start I must highlight my disappointment. Not in Gatsby but those around him. This commemoration of him having so few attendees disappoints me considering that a few days ago he had floods of the wealthy attending his extravagant parties. It is sickening to think that after all Gatsby did for these people to just ignore his death. Half of them have probably forgotten about it now. For those of you that do not know the story of Daisy and Gatsby I will inform you now. Many took advantage of his fame, fortune and generosity to spread rumours about him, which would normally destroy a man, but only made Gatsby stronger. Truthfully, the only crime committed by him was to have loved someone who was out of his reach. A man who achieved so much, only wanted to be loved back by a woman he'd loved for so many years, only hoping that when he returned she'd leave her husband to be with him. Gatsby could not move on from his love. He fell in love with Daisy before he went to war. She married a very wealthy man with old money, named Tom Buchanan a former college football star. When Gatsby returned he changed his past and became a self-made millionaire in order to win back his only true love. It was this passion for Daisy that I believe led to his demise. He only wanted to be better for Daisy yet he could not seem to do it. He destroyed himself with his ambition. Whilst it helps him in many aspects ultimately, he strived for too much which caused him to slowly destroy himself. The hope of having daisy made him lose the present because he was living in the past. Gatsby was an independent hard worker that was extremely loyal and a good hearted. His views of the world around him were greater compared to the world's view of him. Ultimately, he had good character but a broken heart. He had me and a few close friends and no real lover. Many would argue his life to be fulfilling, believing that he had achieved the American dream. His life may have ended with luxury and extravagance, but perhaps even the American dream could not fulfil what he truly wished for.
