The moral decadence of the Nigerian society is no longer news to our ears. In fact the decay has eaten deep that it seems corruption, embezzlement, unchastity, stealing, dishonesty etc. are now a normal way of life and any behaviour short of such will be considered unusual and the individual will be treated as a societal misfit, this is a misnomer for a society that is considered to be one of the most religious societies in the world.
But it is heart breaking to note these days that the church, where moral standards are supposed to be at its peak is now the place where immorality is practiced.
Before we continue, let us define some terms which we will use frequently in this paper:
CHURCH: A place where Christians hold their religious service. A body of Christians who attend or belong to a particular local church. A place where moral and spiritual character is built and nurtured. It is the body of Christ (Rom.12:5).
MORAL: It is concerned with principles of right and wrong, or conforming to standards of behaviour and character based on those principles. In our case as Christians, living right based on the principles laid down by our lord Jesus Christ in the Bible.
IMMORAL: Deviating from what is considered right, proper or good. Deliberately violating accepted principles of right and wrong.
DECADENCE: This is gotten from the word “Decay” it is a state of being degenerate in mental or moral qualities.
Generally speaking, the church does not tolerate immorality; it is a place for moulding characters to have a peaceful and habitable society. But the church of today is characterized with dirty church politics, tribalism, fornication, adultery, bribery, corruption, embezzlement etc.
Is it that preaching on morality is no longer emphasized on the pulpit or is it the worshippers that rub them off their ears the moment the services are ended and return to
