"Cyber-bullying" is when a person is harassed, embarrassed, intimidated, terrorised, tormented, threatened, or otherwise targeted by person using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones by means of threats, sexual remarks, negative labels, ridicule, false statements or disclosure of personal data. it is sometimes referred to as cyber-harassment or cyber stalking. The methods used are limited only by the child's imagination and access to technology. Traditional bullying has been characterized by the following; an intention by the bully to hurt the target (emotionally or physically) an imbalance of power, a continued threat of further aggression, an inability by the target to defend themselves, or “fight back”.
All of these characteristics can be enhanced by the use of electronic media making it even harder for the victim to escape his or her bully’s wrath.
The Scripture says the following in relation to bullying;
Proverbs 6:16-19
There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says the following;
"Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being." [CCC 2258].
This shows that all human life is sacred, and that no-one has the right to harm or end another person’s life. This relates to bullying in many ways, but the most obvious one is the way in which constant long term bullying can lead to the victim becoming depressed and possibly even
