History of the Morro Bay Rock Lots of people come to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, and Los Osos, but not many know the history of the towns; or the rocks. San Luis Obispo County is a huge tourist attraction for many reasons. One probably being the giant Morro Bay rock that is part of the Nine Sisters (Wikipedia). This historical landmark is a 576 foot volcanic plug located just offshore of Morro Bay, California (Felsman). The Morro rock is protected by the Morro Rock State Preserve and is very illegal for the public to mess with. If you climb the rock or disturb the wildlife there, you will be fined because it is forbidden by the law. There is a large variety of animals that roam and call the rock their home. The most species to live there is the vast amount of birds which is one of the main reasons it is extremely illegal. One bird would be the locally endangered peregrine falcon (Felsman). Sea lions and sea otters are very common to be seen in the water around the rock along with hermit crabs, star fish, sea cucumbers, mussels, bivalve mollusks, coral, small fish and many more (Wikipedia). The rock was dug out on and off from 1889 to 1969 (Felsman). A new state law was established in 1966 which transferred the title of the rock to the state of California (Felsman). This gas was heavier than air which meant it stayed near the ground and anyone who would breathe is suffocated immediately (Wikipedia). Another type was mustard gas and this was the most deadly kind because gas masks could not stop it. It penetrated the clothing and burned the skin. During the whole war, gas killed more than 700,000 troops on both sides. Eventually, they stopped the use of gas in 1925 and it was not used in World War II because Hitler got temporarily blinded by it
