As you look closer at the picture, I noticed two women holding Moses on the left side of the picture. I believe that this is Moses mother placing him into the river. The picture represents the chronological order of the events that were carried out. The left-hand side took place first and as you glance to the right-hand side, it represents events that took place later on.
The painting on
page 186 is part of a collection of synagogue art. In particular, the third-century synagogue unearthed in the Syrian town of Dura-Europos. The synagogue not only serves the purpose of worship and sacrifice but also to create an educational understanding of Jewish religious history. The wall paintings that resided in Dura-Europos allowed the congregants to read in its walls' images the entire history of God's saving activities on behalf of Israel as the words describing these events were proclaimed from the Torah and prophetic writings. This painting represents the saving of Moses, who ends up playing a big part in the history of the Jewish people and the holy land.
