Of the civil liberties included in the constitution which do you think is most important? Why?
Of the civil liberties included in the Constitution, I believe the first amendment to be the most important. The first amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of grievances.” I do believe that every part of this amendment is important, but the freedom of religion part of the amendment I believe to be MOST important. I’ve come to this conclusion after much thinking and through several examples. Why do people even practice a religion? There must be some benefit, because human nature dictates that people will only pursue what they perceive as being rewardable. Most religions, if not all of them believe in an afterlife. I believe that there is a heaven and my ultimate goal is to make it there! If these religions did not have the freedom to worship or do the things they see as necessary to make it to heaven then the government is tampering and standing in the way of their salvation or their eternal life. Beliefs of those in the governing body could cause persecution of minority groups (as is seen in countries where freedom of religion is not practiced like North Korea,
Burma, China, and Iran). It is only the power of the Amendment that limits this outcome. I will use myself and my religion as an example, I know that I have a lot of purposes here on Earth. To achieve success, make a difference, find love, start a family, etc… But if I can’t make it to Heaven, then all those things are done in vain. Whether or not the government protects this civil liberty, I would still practice my religion. This is what makes America so great. We hear about other countries where people are being
