The most important freedom of the First Amendment is free speech because people need it for a healthy democracy, is the building block of other freedoms and promote nonviolence. The First Amendment allows people to have 5 freedoms, the freedom to freely speak, publish something against the government, petition for change, peacefully protest, and practice any religion of a person’s choosing. The first reason why it is the most important freedom is it the key to a healthy democracy. Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of America stated “freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government: when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins. If we cannot say what we want, democracy cannot be true to its ideas of a government where the people get a voice, and it might as well be an oligarchy or dictatorship. Also, it is the building block to other freedoms. Without freedom of speech, there is no freedom of the press. Think about it. People need freedom of speech to say and write what they want to. Including giving reports on current events and writing about them without the government censoring their work. Without freedom of speech, people can’t write those articles or talk about those events, because they don't have the freedom to express their opinions. Therefore they cannot report what the government might not want them to, and their work can be censored, or altered to be biased. Which means that we need it for freedom of the press to function. Lastly, freedom of speech is very important because without it, America would be much more violent. Freedom of speech not only makes a good democracy. It also makes a peaceful, nonviolent
