After I read “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and “Two Ways to Belong in America” by Bharati Mukherjee, I understand that the familiarity with the English language affect the authors a lot. All of those three writers share the same attitude that learning English can affect people’s lives. I totally agree with these three writer’s opinions that English can affect people and I think people who live in the United States should speak English fluently. Everybody looks at English in many different ways. Some people think that English is just a language that can make a connection with other people; some people think that English is a tool which can be used in work and there are also some people who think that English is the best way to speak with family members. There are both advantages and disadvantage for learning English as a second language. The advantages are that learning English can make family members closer and can help people to find a better job; but as a second language, English is hard to learn. One of the benefits of learning English is that it can become the family language which makes family members closer. For example, in Amy Tan’s essay, Tan argues that her mother's English is the language of intimacy. Although the English her family speaks is not perfect or standard, it is the language that connects her family and the language she grew up with. Her professional English is the language she uses in her essays, in a speech, or when she speaks with other people. She needs to be very careful. Since Tan is an English writer, she felt shame when her mother spoke English because most people could not understand her mother's English. However she came to believe that her mother's English was perfectly clear; she even thought it was more vivid, direct, and imaginative after she found out this was the English that relates to her family.
