Our song:
A goodbye to remember

Turn around
Say it loud.
Face the rhythm of the night to say goodbye.

Take your time to think about all the things we shared while watching the stars.

You may leave, but I believe that our love will remain strong till eternity.

I write this song to you, so when pain comes to you you’ll have a piece of me in your hands to embrace.

I hope you stay strong, the stars will light up the perfect way for you to follow while gone.

Cause I’ll be waiting for a star to tell me there’s light
Waiting for it to tell me you’re safe and the mission is done.

This is a sad song, it reflects sadness and heartache. The theme is a guy who is leaving her (the narrator). But he’s leaving her not because he wants to, but because he has a military mission. He has enlisted to be a military soldier as volunteer service. He doesn’t want to go but he needs to. He is in such a pain for leaving her that he doesn’t even have the courage to say goodbye “Face the rhythm of the night to say goodbye”. Also, she says that she writes this song to him so when he’s in pain he’ll have a piece of her to embrace. The symbol is the stars. The stars in the song represent light. Stars represent her hope and faith that he’ll be done soon and he’ll be back home safe. The motif is the mission. All of the song surrounds the fact that he’s leaving for a mission. This fact emphasizes the feelings and can also apply in other situations. I mean, life is a mission and sometimes you’ll say goodbye even though you want to stay, but sometimes that isn’t possible; you just remain faithful to see them again.

Though there are many differences between the song and the poem, the theme and SOAPSTone elements are similar in a lot of ways. In the song, Tyler is explaining his experience with depression. By him saying “he lost his car radio” , he’s talking about the music that helps him through the rough times. He has lost his outlet and now is left alone with his thoughts. Similarly, the poem is about a lonely guy who is also experiencing depression. He compares it to being “acquainted with the night.” He’s saying that he’s lonely and he’s isolating himself because of the depression. The subject of the song deals with depression mostly because Tyler’s mind is going crazy with bad thoughts. The car radio is stolen and he’s in silence, which silence can bring about sadness and overthinking. In the same way, the poem’s subject is about the same topics, depression, loneliness and isolation. The narrator has never found any comfort in his depression. He is unwilling to express his feelings because he feels as if no one…

    Tom Brennan Journey

This song gives the story of one young man who through the outbreak of war takes a new path which ultimately leads him to Vietnam fighting for his country. As is “the story of Tom Brennan” the main character experiences a fear of what lies ahead but rather than the clique fear of death and destruction which the character seems reasonably naive to it is rather a fear of the ramifications and aftermaths of an event that changes the young mans life for ever. “And I can still hear Frankie, lying screaming in the…

In the song, there is a lot of alliteration used such as the phrase “passing-out parade at Puckapunyal” and “Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon”. A passing out parade is a sort of graduation ceremony for soldiers one they have completed their training and Puckapunyal is and Australian Army Base in Victoria. This signifies that a soldier is ready to be sent away and is qualified to fight in a war. “Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon”, man landed on the moon on the 21st July 1969 and on the very same day, Platoon 3, a military unit, was deployed on operation on Mundinburra, to the mine-infested Long Hai Hills of South Vietnam. When a radio signal had been passed on that the Americans had landed on the moon, the historic news was passed onto the men. That day, two mines were tripped. Skipper Hines and Corporal John needs both lost their lives. 23 soldiers were wounded and of these, 11 were wounded badly enough to be repatriated to Australia, one of which was Frank “Frankie” Hunt. Although in the song it gives the impression that he had died, he actually didn’t, but he was 11 months from going home and to a soldier, going home because of injury can make you feel like you have let down your country, and they will never be able to forgive you. 11 months seems like a long time to us, but to a soldier, it was all they could ask for.…

By reading just the title I think the poem is going to be about someone dying. I say that because of the words eulogy and veteran. The line “do not stand at my grave and weep” means don’t visit his grave and be sad. The line “I am not there, I do not sleep” means that they aren’t there; they’re not going to show up. The line “I am a thousand winds that blow” is a metaphor which is used to give feeling to the poem meaning that he’s there for his family; that he wants his family to think about him every time they feel the wind blow. The line “I am the diamond glint of snow” is also a metaphor meaning he wants his family to think of him when they see the new, shiny snow of winter. “I am the sunlight on ripened grain” is a metaphor meaning he is warmth and golden. “I am the gentle autumn rain” is also a metaphor but it means that he’s gentle and he’s there when it’s raining. “When you awaken in the mornings hush” is a reminder to the family from the veteran. “I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight” is a metaphor telling his family to think of him when they feel that uplifting rush. “I am the soft stars that shine at night” is a metaphor reminding his family to think of him when they see the stars shining at night. “I am not there, I DID NOT DIE” means that even though he’s not on earth anymore he plans to remind his family that he loves them through the little things he’s mentioned throughout the poem. I think the attitude of this poem is…

The music reflects a mood of sadness and reflection on the terrible events that happened to Fergal O’Hanlon and Sean South. This music sample tells a story of a particular historic event in 1957. The song is about Fergal O’Hanlon (from Ballybay Co. Monaghan) and Sean South (from Limerick) who were both soldiers that were killed in an ambush in Brookorough R.U.C. station. This was Fergal O’Hanlon’s first active service since his training in Dublin two years prior. Fergal, Sean and a few others were ambushed from a machine gun being fired from the top window of the R.U.C. station.…

    Five Signature Themes

Throughout taking this test I thought how long and specific it was. It had answers that were similar and I had to choose between the two even though the two answers were essentially the same. However, the results were accurate and it was because of the extremely specific questions. My five signature themes are, in order, restorative, achiever, learner, empathy, and analytical. Of those themes two are in the executing category, two are in the strategic thinking category, and one is in the relationship building category. Restorative is about fixing problems and the want to be helpful in the process of problem solving. Achiever is about having the drive and determination to complete tasks. Learner is about the trying to learn more about a variety…

The song “The Sound of Silence” can be interpreted in different ways, but has an overall constant tone of being depressed and weary throughout all of the five stanzas. In the first stanza, the narrator may have had a nightmare previously and is turning for darkness to comfort him. It seems as if he wants to keep this awful dream secret “within the sound of silence”. This line may also suggest that he is scared or fears something terrible will happen in the future when the narrator’s feelings are very gloomy and says “a vision is softly creeping”. Inside the second stanza, the narrator talks about another dream he is having and in that dream a light that “split the night” touches ‘the sound of silence’.…

In the second stanza, the soldier begins to reminisce of the light that filled his world before his accident, this outlines his naivety and lack of knowledge of war and its consequences. He also relishes in fact that ‘girls glanced’ at his beauty and how that all has changed when he ‘threw away his knees’. This is effective in showing his regret and also how much of a waste it was. This effect is increased by the emphasis on how handsome and desirable he was before the accident. It is implied that the feeling on confinement doesn’t make him feel as lonely as the fact that he will never find love or at least feel the satisfaction of human contact. This is intended to communicate a powerful feeling of sympathy and possibly empathy of the reader. He also reminisces on the light that filled his world and how ‘Glow…
