One of the biggest days in the National Football League (NFL) other than the Super Bowl is draft day. Hard core football fans will watch to see who their football teams pick to play for them. The movie Draft Day is all about what goes into this stressful day for most General Managers (GM). Draft Day is focused in Cleveland, Ohio around the Cleveland Browns. The GM Sonny Weaver Jr has the job of deciding who he wants to pick up in order to create a winning team, while competing with all the other football teams in the nation. Throughout the movie there are multiple negotiation scenes between the main character Sonny and other characters.

According to the textbook, the definition of power is, “the ability to bring about outcomes they desire” or “the ability to get things done the way they want them to be done” (p.156). Sonny has a couple different sources of power. Being the General Manager of the Cleveland Browns he has legitimate power along with expert power. Sonny’s legitimate power comes from his position. He has the ability to pick who he wants to pick, no matter what Coach Penn or the staff think should be picked. Sonny’s has expert power because he knows how to pick players he is an expert in the football world and can make decision based on just that. Mr. Molina the owner has multiple power available to him. He has that legitimate power, since he owns the team, he has the ability to make all final decisions. Mr. Molina also has reward and coercive power. He can reward his employees for doing what he wants, but he also has the coercive power. The coercive power is seen during the movie when he and Sonny are at the waterpark. Mr. Molina uses that power to threaten Sonny that he will be looking for a new job if Bo Callahan is not picked. The last main character is Coach Penn, he has the expert power, along with reward and coercive power. Coach Penn’s power are not as powerful as Sonny’s or Mr. Molina but he still has those powers. Coach Penn has the ability to reward or punish his players. He also has to have expert power because he is the coach.
