Leadership is a lifestyle, not a role one adopts. Leadership requires strength and power, but also the ability to empathize and recognize others' needs. As a high school student, I have had many opportunities to be a leader, whether it be through clubs, group projects, or extracurricular activities. During my Junior year, I assistant directed the play Steel Magnolias under the eye of my drama teacher as well as a college student director. This role allowed me to learn the ropes of directing as well as take care of the six girls cast in the show. I adapted the role of the "stage mom," making sure every hair was curled to perfection and every prop was in its place, as well as ensuring their lines were memorized and their staging was proper. I…

When Trumpets Fade is a movie about A Private named David Manning who is involved in the battle of Hurtgen Forest during World War II. Private Manning attempts to get out of the fight and go home, even claiming he is mentally unfit; he is instead successively promoted and moved in to positions of greater responsibility. Bonhoeffer: Agent of grace is based on actual events surrounding Dietrich Bonhoeffer during World War II in Germany. Bonhoeffer is a theologian who opposes the Nazi regime in Germany and takes a stand for what he believes in. I chose these two movies because they were two movies that I had never seen and they were recommended by the Warrant Officer Career College. I have seen many movies with military and leadership themes and many of them initially came to mind when considering what to analyze for this assignment. However, I was intrigued by the recommendation of two movies I had never seen, one of which I had never even heard of. Both of the movies display leadership traits of multiple characters but focus mostly on the main characters I previously…

The film Glory, gives the audiences the chance to witness the close relationship between two very different men: Private Thomas Searles and Private Silas Trip. Searles and Trip started out as men from different lifestyles who have an aversion towards one another. Trip constantly mocked Thomas for being different compared to the other black man. Trip kept on bothering Searles because he was jealous of his lifestyle. Trip was surprised that Thomas talked "as good as a white folk” (Fields and Zwick 1989). Their relationship takes a substantial turn on the battlefield when Trip is about to be killed and Thomas bravely jumps in to saves him. They supported each other and ended up developing a brotherly bond through the movie. Together they put away their differences and together used their passion to fight bravely side by side in the war. Although these men grew up in different lifestyles, when they become part of the 54th Regiment they showed the best leadership. Both Searles and Trip fit the leadership fit because they showed determination and courage throughout the film.…

    12 Angry Men: Leadership

In the movie 12 Angry Men there were two primary examples of leadership. The first was in the beginning of the movie, when the foreman gets everyone together in the room and has them sit down, assigning them each a number. He then proceeds to go over the process and rules they will proceed with, and sets up the initial voting. After the initial voting, he has them go around in a circle one by one to discuss the reasons why they voted the way they did. As the film progresses, the leadership shifts towards man number 8, the one who initially voted not guilty. He demonstrates behavioral leadership as he begins to give information and supporting arguments of why there could be reasonable doubt to accuse the boy of murder, while staying calm and collected and involving the team members input in the discussion. He begins standing up and persuasively presenting his arguments, winning the team over one by one.…

I have taken a lot of leadership roles such as helping out at summer camps, in my 4-H club, in NJHS, and in karate. This quality carries over into my school life. Often, I become the leader in group projects, specifically in World Studies. In sixth grade, the Humanities Program did a Greek City State Olympics, and my group represented Rhodes. For this project, we had to design an event as well as create prizes for the winners. I took leadership for the prizes, creating wreaths. Similarly, in seventh grade, we did plays based on African folktales. My group of four was given the folktale “The Foolishness of the Ostrich.” When no one else was willing to play the ostrich, I took leadership and played the…
