In 2001, Sana Hanafi moved over 7,000 miles to start her future in the US. Sana comes from Pakistan, a country located in southern Asia (see image on left). She came with her Husband after they were newly married. Together they have moved across the country numerous times, settling in over 5 states! Why move so often, though? Why move at all? According to Sana, she “...was studying for my medical boards and my Husband was trying to get better opportunities. This led us to move from different states...”
Moving to a new country is like moving to a new school. Nobody knows who you are and it’s tough to fit in. Sana went through this process over and over, and today she is happy with the outcome of all the hard work and dedication it took to really adapt to the environment and ways of life in the US. Sana’s move began in sunny California and ended (for now) in cold Pennsylvania. It was most definitely not a simple task.

Sana was ready to work in the medical field, but her deficit of medical experience was her Achilles Heel. “...I had my challenges getting into the system as far as my career is concerned.” Sana didn’t let this hold her back, though. She promptly began working towards what she needed. “...I was sending out hundreds of emails every day to help me get some clinical experience that was required in order for me to get my residency.” After lots of tough work, she finally managed to get a job and begin working.
Today, Sana is a successful doctor and mother of 1. If she could go back and start over, Sana explains that there is not much she would change. “I would be more prepared before coming here.” Sana recommends to, “...Come with an open mind.” No matter where you move to, no matter how far or how long it takes, “...There are always challenges, but opportunities.
