CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background Of The Study
Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking, "literature" is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of prose, poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. Prose is one of part in the literature that means a form of language which applies ordinary grammatical structure and natural flow of speech rather than rhythmic structure (as in traditional poetry). Prose is divided into 2 kinds, they are fiction and non-fiction. There are kinds of fiction, they are myth, legend, fairytale, novel, short story. In non-fiction there are kinds too, they are biography, science, and thesis.
In this research, the researcher will just focus on short story. Short story is a brief work of literature, usually written in narrative prose. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel, authors of both generally draw from a common pool of literary techniques. Sometimes short story is used to analyze the elements in the story. Analyzing the story is used to understand what means of this story. To analyze short story, we have to know about the elements of short story, they are intrinsic and extrinsic elements. But in this section we explain more specific. It’s just the instrinsic elements that are explained in this research. The intrinsic elements are the elements that build up in the literary works of literature itself. The purpose of the elements is included in the literary work itself.
Because of the task of Prose in 4th semester is to analyze the intrinsic elements of short story that the story has been given by the lecturer. The tittle of short story is “Mr. Know All”. We just read and understand the story in order that we know about the intrinsic elements of this story. After understanding the story, we can explain in general about the intrinsic
