Mr Spencer's Relationship In Catcher In The Rye

Through chapter one to five, Holden encounters various people. For, instance, Mr. Spencer is one of the few people Holden respects. They both care about each other. The concern Mr. Spencer through the act of lecturing Holden about his future shows this. As for Holden, he states how he feels a bit depressed seeing how weak and fragile his history teacher looked. He also says, “I’d have come over to say good-by anyway” (7). This demonstrates his fondness towards this teacher. Furthermore, it is evident that Stradlater and Holden has a mutualistic relationship. While Holden does Stradlater a favor, doing his English homework for him, he gets company. Holden knew he was using him as he states, “…and that you’re just dying to do them a favor” (28).
Despite this, he agrees to do it. Even though he seems to criticize and judge others, it is apparent that he wants someone to talk to. Ackley is another person Holden encounters. Holden seems to look after him due to sympathy. For instance, he “asked Mal if he minded if Ackley came along with us” (36). It is apparent that not a lot of people like Ackley; however, Holden himself asks to bring Ackley with them to the movies instead of letting him stay in his room alone. Nevertheless, as Ackley does not have any friends, he seeks the company of Holden, as he continuously barges in and starts up a conversation with him.
