Mud City Book Report
Carigan Donnelly
Ms. Siano
Per. 3-4
9 June 2011 Mud City by Deborah Ellis has a person vs. self conflict. Throughout the book, the main character Shauzia is constantly battling with herself so she can make her way from Pakistan to France. At the age of fourteen and living in current Pakistan, she has many things to deal with each day including other people who make her doubt herself. But, she is determined to finish her journey and prove those people wrong. Mrs. Weera helped Shauzia into the refugee camp. Although some people would kill to get into there and have any sort of food and shelter, Shauzia wants more. When she asks to get paid for all of her services that she has done in the camp, Mrs. Weera denies even the thought of it. “ ‘You don’t know what it’s like out there. You’ve always been taken care of. You won’t be able to manage on your own’ ” (Ellis 19). Shauzia was furious by this accusation and made up her mind immediately. She would leave this camp and prove herself to Mrs. Weera. But when Shauzia had been delivered back to the camp after a very interesting journey alone in Peshawar, she realizes that they don’t care if she proves herself or not. To Shauzia, it seemed as though Mrs. Weera did not care enough to even pay her any attention. So Shauzia devised a plan to sneak into the locked flour shack and prove herself once again by stealing flour for her part of camp. But as she was running from the shack a man grabbed the flour out of her arms and proceeded to hit her. “He raised his arm and slammed his fist into Shauzia’s head. She dropped to the ground. Her head hit the dirt with a thud, and she watched the man run off with her flour” (Ellis 133). She woke up in a hospital bed with a broken leg and cast sometime later. All she could think about was how she had failed to keep the flour from the man. Children always seem to think they are smarter than adults. Even if someone says not to do something, they try to prove how cool they are by

Failure to conform to such laws results in consequences which habitually comprise corporal abuse. Regardless of these corollaries, Mariam and Laila still stand behind their beliefs. Since women were discriminated against in Afghanistan and not given many rights, Mariam and Laila face many restrictions and confines within their society. “You will not laugh in public. If you do, you will be beaten.” (Pg.278) Women are not permitted to articulate their emotions in public, showing the chastisement and absurd nature of the government. Although the government implements rigorous laws, Laila contravenes them despite consequences exhibiting strength and determination. “And so Laila’s life suddenly revolved around ways to see Aziza. If she was lucky she was given a tongue lashing, a single kick in the rear, or a shove in the back. Other times, she was met with assortments or wooden clubs, fresh tree branches, short whips, slaps, or open fists.” (Ch.42) Laila goes on journeys to see Aziza and gets beaten by means of the stringent laws implemented by the government. Nevertheless, she is indomitable to see her daughter by any means necessary. This shows how she epitomizes assiduousness and…

Just because they are teenagers and think they can drive a car and are mature, doesn’t mean they are. So kids/teens get other kids saying stuff, or start something where it can make someone feel bad. Which can be very immature. On the website “14 year Old Immature Is This Normal [Archive]” SquarePig says “I messed about at school a lot and have continued to mess about in my adult life. given any opportunity I will laugh at work and do stupid things at work, especially when bored. I don't do it on my own, though, but I am usually the ringleader, I´m a bad influence and encourage others to misbehave (but I rarely get caught). Still at 48, I should know better.” So even parents can make their own kids immature or can encourage them to misbehave. Thirteen year olds may think they are mature, but what they don’t realise is that other people around them (friends, parents, etc.) may cause them to act…
