SITUATION

Enhanced Language Training (ELT) offered by TDSB.

• 14-week program experience in-class training followed by a work-placement experience. - Eight-week enhanced language training course, focuses on improving Business English skills and introduces clients to Canadian workplace culture. • Within the first eight weeks, clients receive sector specific training in one of the following fields: • - Accounting, Customer Service & Administration for Immigrant Women, Engineering Financial Services, IT and Sales & Marketing.

• Unpaid Work Placement Experience • Job Development Support

Program Eligibility

• Newcomers that are eligible to work in Canada; • All learners must be Permanent Residents or persons who have been deemed a Convention Refugee; • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 6+ or LINC level 5 (completed); and • Learners must be committed to an 8-week Business English program.

TASK:
Marketing ELT to a specific audience of other new immigrants, job seekers, people who need to enhance their English language skills – and those unaware of the existence of the ELT Program

Suggestions for Improvement:

1- Rebranding and repositioning of the program 2- Increase awareness in different communities 3- Increase the reach to the target market 4- Encourage alumni to promote the program through social media 5- Engage audiences at social-multicultural events 6- Hand over flyers right at the airport to newcomers 7- Set up booths at career fairs 8- Create awareness before landing through CIIP 9- Create awareness amongst potential employers

ACTION:

Recommended Steps:

1- Add a tagline under the ELT brand: (1- ‘Bridging the employer-employee gap’

All these indigenous people were a part of what America is today, a more multicultural country.     The lesson reviewed was “Sexism: From Identification to Activism,” a very proactive lesson that dug into the issue of sexism, and how the students lives where affected by the topic. The lesson begins by introducing a quote about sexism that goes over the forms in which it can be expressed. From there the lesson plan has the students begin to explore how sexism shapes language, the government, and behavior. The students are asked to share their beliefs on sexism and how it affects their lives via a handout provided by the teacher as well as classroom discussion. The teacher in this lesson plan needs to be prepared with examples to promote student discussion if there is a lack of participation.     In the service of social harmony, politeness often discourages the expression of negative emotions even if they are felt and encourages the expression of positive emotions even if they aren't felt. I completely agree with this statement as I have often observed people responding in this manner. We have been always taught to be nice to others even if they do us bad or say something nasty but I feel that it limits the freedom of speech and also you are not being true to yourself and to the other person. Not telling the person how you truly feel and sugar coating the words does more harm to your relationship that telling the person honestly. It might look like an easy route to not look like a mean or bad person or not to hurt the other person’s feeling but keeping how you truly feels inside you and just saying good things makes you more negative and eventually the true feelings will come out and things will turn really ugly then.…

In every work environment there are different cultures of people working together for a common purpose of supporting themselves or a family, and as always there is a different in work ethnic among workers because of the different culture. Many times when more than one person of the same culture is working on the same job they seem to bond and become inseparable during the course of the job. Several times I was placed on a job where I would seem like the outsider. The same people you work with everyday seem to change once joined with others from their culture, the different conversation are carried on and not understanding what they are saying seems to bother me a lot, I have no idea if they are talking about me or the job, a weird feeling of guilt appears to come to me as I walk by them talking in a language that is not recognizable to me. The feeling of not being wanted or the feeling that you are being talked about, because every now and then they look at you and start laughing as if though you are the punch line of their jokes, it is just a weird feeling being the foreigner, but yet you work with the same people every day, and yet you get the feeling that you do not know them as well as you thought you knew them.     According to Garcia, Jensen, and Scribner (2009) the term “English language learners (ELLs)” is used to refer to students who are not yet proficient enough in English in order to properly benefit from the instruction provided exclusively in this language. Garcia (2012) notes that research has categorized ELLs into three cohorts. Garcia (2012) exemplifies these three groups by indicating that in California, the long-term ELLs are the largest cohort that makes up about two-thirds of the ELL population in that state. The rest of the ELLs include recent immigrants who possess either low or high previous academic background (Freeman, Freeman & Mercuri, 2002). The report developed by the Grantmakers for Education (2010) states that even though many immigrant children are ELLs, most of the ELLs were born in the United States. Grantmakers for Education (2010) report that over 75% of ELLs enrolled in elementary grades are second generation or probably third generation Americans. This report also indicates that about 95% of immigrant children were born in the country. According to Garcia (2012) each of the three cohorts of ELLs identifies possess a unique set of academic and linguistic requirements.
