Introduction
Municipal Wi-Fi or Municipal wireless network is a step towards making Internet services available to everyone by wireless technology. A geographical area under a municipality is provided with a wireless broadband service in many cities in US. Currently this idea is getting spread around the world. The structure of the wireless network is a mesh network with more than hundreds of routers are installed on the outdoors of the buildings. The network is operated by a wireless ISP. In this report we will discuss about implementation of municipal WiFi in different countries and the status of those implementation.
1. Municipal WiFi in Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi in Texas is considered to be one of the top ten ‘digital cities’ of the nation. It implemented one of the first municipal WiFi network in the city. The network was developed using mesh topology and routers. (Vos, 2010).
In 2005, a wireless network coverage was implemented in Corpus Christi for the project of automation in water and gas supply meter. The same network was being used for network connection to the offices and homes in the same city. Later on a larger number of hot-spots were installed citywide to provide internet connection. This implementation was successful as they received almost 20000 user sessions in a month. Google Fiber has been requested to include this city in the Fiber project.
The municipal WiFi network in Corpus Christi is being used for various applications including automated gas and water meter reading, public safety and public Internet service. To manage the increasing traffic and monitoring public places by wireless video cameras the city is upgrading their infrastructure and services. Corpus Christi becomes crowded during Spring breaks in colleges. So, the city authority is expanding the WiFi network to cover the beaches for monitoring those areas for public safety.
