For decades education and healthcare providers have used music as a form of teaching and medicating students and patients. Some may be confused as to what music therapy is and what it does. Violet Hemsy De Gainza wrote an article in Music Therapy and Music in Special Education claiming “Music therapy is the controlled use of music in the treatment, education, training and rehabilitation of children and adults suffering from emotional, physical, or mental disorders”(Gainz 9). Graziela Cintra Gomes states “it is important to experience the sound of the objects surrounding us that are living elements of the environment. The auditory imagination is extended with sounds produced by objects and by classical and electronic instruments” (Gomes 13). Music therapy has strong impacts on these children with disabilities. Christopher Page wrote a section in Music as Medicine claiming “For reasons of greater need, if it be judged [music will be] very useful for improving someone’s condition...one greatly needs the sound and harmony of a musical instrument to raise their spirits” (Page 110). This article only furthers expands on the ones from Music Therapy and Music in Special Education by proving that music therapy improves medical conditions, therefore, it is useful and necessary in schools. Their brains are capable of moving specific body parts when certain sounds are heard. These children began to identify with certain sounds. When children with disabilities begin to identify with sounds they learn how to move and express themselves in healthy ways. They begin to learn how to communicate when they are unable to speak.
