Review Questions
1. What are the basic elements of music? The basic elements of music are melody, harmony, rhythm, tone, form, tempo, and dynamics.
2. What is pitch? Pitch is the quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of a tone.
3. What is syncopation? What types of music use syncopation? syncopation includes a variety of rhythms which are in some way unexpected in that they deviate from the strict succession of regularly spaced strong and weak but also powerful beats in a meter (pulse). These include a stress on a normally unstressed beat or a rest where one would normally be stressed.
4. What are three examples of forms of music? Describe each form. Rap, pop, classical.
What is form in music? Form is referred to as the framework that a composer uses to create a piece of music.

Critical Thinking Questions
1. Music has sometimes been referred to as a “universal language.” Why has this description been applied to music? Do you agree or disagree with this assessment? Why? Emotions are a common feeling shared among human beings.
Music communicates so many things that everyone can understand without having to speak a word.
It communicates love, frustration, hatred, war, friendship, commerce, marriage, separation, unity, confusion... etc., so yes, I do agree.

2. Why is musical notation important? What benefits do musicians and others receive from being able to write down and note aspects of a musical piece? Music notation or musical notation is any system used to visually represent aurally perceived music through the use of written symbols, including ancient or modern musical sybols. Although many ancient cultures used symbols to represent melodies, none of them is nearly as comprehensive as written language, limiting the knowledge of ancient music to a few fragments. Comprehensive music notation began to be developed in Europe in the middle ages and has been adapted to many kinds of music worldwide.
3. In the first part of the unit, we discussed how music is everywhere in society. What are some of the ways that we use music? How do you use music in your own life? Music can affect the body in many health-promoting ways, which is the basis for a growing field known as music therapy. However, you can use music in your daily life and achieve many stress relief benefits on your own. One of the great benefits of music as a stress reliever is that it can be used while you conduct your regular activities so that it really doesn’t take time away from your busy schedule. Music provides a wonderful backdrop for your life so that you can find increased enjoyment from what you’re doing and also reduce stress from your day.
