I am currently in the delayed entry program of the United States …show more content…
Navy and I will be a Corpsman, the equivalent of a civilian paramedic. The delayed entry program is a group of people who have joined the navy and are waiting to be shipped to Chicago-Great Lakes for basic training. Naval training starts in Chicago where every sailor goes through standard basic training and learns the ground fundamentals of how to be a good sailor and be successful in the Navy. Basic training can compare to high school where each student is given the basic classes to move on into a specialty in college. My specialty in the Navy is going to be a corpsman, which includes schooling in San Antonio, Texas at army base Fort Sam Houston. This school is called an “A” school where all sailors learn skills specific to their job, these schools are located all around the country and you are sent to a specific base dependent on your job. My “A” school is 19 weeks long and is comprised of EMT, nurse, and Navy specific medical training that will give me the tools to further my knowledge.
After my corpsman training I will be sent to a place called my “final duty station” this is my first assignment after training. Although it has the word final in it, this base is not my final destination because after this I will be sent to the fleet where we travel the world while keeping the seas safe from all threats. I picked a job that would ultimately do good, I am someone who wants to help others and do everything I can to help someone that is in dire medical need. This job will help me achieve my American Dream because I will be helping people and I will be serving my country at the same time. The tools the Navy gives me will make me a better, stronger, and more educated person and will prepare me for all things in life that can happen good or bad.
The Navy also has a very good perk which is “free” college. The Navy never sets its sailors up to fail, and I am confident that serving my country will do nothing but help me become a better person and a successful dreamer. While in the Navy I will experience all parts of the medical field and based on that I will start my college education in classes that will enhance my skills achieved in the Navy. To me an education must consist of things that you are interested in, for instance, I am currently taking a human anatomy class because I am interested in the way the body is structured. And I believe that this class will give me an advantage when becoming a Corpsman because I will be one step ahead of the competition.
I am currently taking some basic classes needed to get my degree while in high school. I have taken Composition I and am currently taking Composition II and Human Anatomy. These classes will allow me to get my basic requirements out of the way in order to pursue a career in the medical field. After I reach my final duty station I will re-start my college education to further my pursuit of my American Dream. I will start by finishing my basic classes such as liberal arts classes and other classes similar to those in my high school career. Speaking of the Liberal Arts I recently read a book called in Defense of a Liberal Education by Fareed Zakaria. Zakaria taught me that the base of all advanced education is the liberal arts and without the liberal arts success is harder to achieve. Zakaria said “the central virtue of a liberal education is that it teaches you how to write, and writing makes you think. Whatever you do in life, the ability to write clearly, cleanly, and reasonably quickly will prove to be an invaluable skill.” Zakaria also discussed in his book how having a base in the liberal arts doesn’t just help you succeed in college but when applying for jobs and even talking to family, each one of us needs some sort of liberal education so that we can be well rounded human beings and better people. And based on what I have learned from him, I will start to go further into my career options and decide what I want to go to school for. For the time being I want to have something to do with the medical field or become a teacher. I have thought about being a paramedic, RN, and even a doctor but I will base all of this on my experiences in the Navy. I have not started my training in the Navy, but once I experience my job as a paramedic I believe I will be able to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life, and will be able to decide what classes to take in college. If I go in the Navy and absolutely hate my job, I will know that I will not want a career in the medical field and my short five years in the Navy will eliminate one of the most thought about careers in my life. If I do not go into the medical field my backup plan is to become a teacher.
The reason I want to become a teacher is to help the young people of our nation to learn the basic skills that they need in life and to be informed about the past so that they do not make the same mistakes of past generations. A teaching job is not exactly the best paid job in the country, but at least I will have the opportunity to keep our country full of great people that want to further their American Dream and can find themselves, maybe even in the same position I am in where they serve our country to keep its citizens safe. As an aspiring K-12 teacher, I will need to enroll in a 4-year bachelor’s degree and major in history. I can start this education in the Navy and if I do not finish it, I will finish my degree once out of the Navy using the tuition assistance program and will be living debt free with a full college education. By finishing my college education, I can start a successful career as either a teacher or a paramedic anywhere in the country and I can travel around the country to help anyone in need and to help those who do not know how to pursue their American Dream.
My American Dream is comprised of four things: serving my country, helping others, being well off financially, and family.
By going in the Navy I will be fulfilling my first term of the American Dream but I will also be fulfilling all of my American dream because I get an education for free and be there for my family once I have one. Going in the Navy will give me the tools to be a successful person and will give me a college education to be even more successful in the civilian world. Helping people has always been something I have wanted to do, and by becoming a corpsman and having a foot in the door to the medical field will allow me to succeed in my dream of helping others. There has not been a single thought in my mind to have a career other than one that would allow me to help others. I have thought of being a police officer, paramedic, fire fighter, counselor, teacher, and just about every career that involves helping people in some manner. The second part to my American Dream is being well off financially will be achieved by being in the Navy and getting an education that is crazy expensive for free. And having a family has always been a part of my American Dream, having a wife and children that can do great things and I can have great experiences with is one of the best things a person can experience. But overall to achieve my American Dream I believe that it is my duty to help others to achieve their dream, whether it is serving my country to keep them safe or directly teaching them how to achieve their dream I believe it is my job to help others achieve their
dreams.
