My Best Memories ENG
My Best Memories
I cannot forget about my 18th birthday. Because I celebrated my birthday by serving as a one-day volunteer for a charitable organization.
My day as a volunteer commenced as early as 7a.m.. I was one of the first to arrive at Dataran Borneo waiting to be joined by other volunteers. By 7.30a.m., I was surprised to see that so many people were willing to sacrifice their Sunday just to give back something back to the community. Half an hour later, a bus came to pick us up and we were all ready to serve the community.
Our first stop was at beach located by 45 minutes away. We went out to collect the rubbish on the beach. In less than an hour, we collected more than 13 bags of rubbish. I was particularly shocked to witness firsthand just how irresponsible some people could be. Nevertheless, I was glad to be able to contribute in my little way to help clean the beach.
Then, the bus took us to an orphanage in Sepang, the orphans were certainly hoping us as they woke up early to greet us at the entrance. As we got off the bus, it was truly disheartening to see the orphanage being in such a sorry state. We had donated some supplies to them. We could see the joy on their face as we loaded those supplies into their centre.
We spend about 3 hours at the orphanage and then we made our journey to the town and set up a booth. The booth was aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of giving back to the community. Those who were interested were asked to leave their contact details and they would be contacted via e-mails. We decided not to distribute fliers and brochures as we wanted to be more eco-friendly.
Joining the one-day mission as a volunteer was definitely something that I would be proud of. That satisfaction that I got was worth more than anything that money could buy. And this day was my unforgettable memories in my life.

Seeing as though my 18th birthday is about a week away and people have been asking me what I want, the best present I could get would be if no one wished me happy birthday. I don’t want to relive that disastrous day. To me, it seems more logical to expect nothing and receive nothing, than to expect everything and receive nothing. Because of that experience, the best birthday gift to me would be to act like my birthday doesn’t…

I cut the grass for some of my family because they asked me to cut it for them. I did it for my Aunt Gwen and my Grandma Hill. I enjoy my time with my Aunt and I was working together with my brother and my cousin and we had a great time over at my Aunt’s house. And at my Grandma's house we had a great time over there. I got to see my baby cousin and I haven’t seen here in a long time. I would do this again anytime because it was fun and if they ask me to. No matter how small the impact is, it will always make a big impact. Volunteering is not about how big the action is, the littlest things will build a base for the future. Smiles and laughing are contagious. In order to make the best out of every volunteer activity, I have learned to always keep a smile on my face. This not only applicable in volunteering, but also in everyday activity. Whenever I see someone looking upset, I always smile and wave. That small gesture can change their entire day.…

After introducing myself to all the girls, the 12 girls dragged me to their room with so much excitement. Walking into their room, I had to stop and take a deep breath. I knew the orphanage wouldn't have much, but I never imagined how little they really had. Their room looked like it belonged to an old abandoned house. The ceiling caved in; it smelled of an old dusty attic and had nothing in it but 12 beds, 3 dressers and a couple dirty stuffed animals just lying around. Some girls had pictures of when they were babies, some didn't have anything. I stood there silent. Tears balanced on my eyelids because at that moment, I realized that I have been so ungrateful for what I have, while other young, beautiful girls around the world have nothing but a bed and a stuffed animal. I think about all my clothes, shoes, friends and family that…

The next day I was awakened by sunshine and a breeze of crisp air. The camp we were staying was by no means a Hilton Hotel, but the rooms had running water, ceiling fans, bathrooms, and electrical outlets. When taking showers we were instructed to cut off the water as often as necessary to try to conserve as much as we could. After everyone was done getting prepared for that day there was a group meeting where we got to meet the staff at Mission of Hope, the kids that live on camp, the translators, cooks, and interns. Everyone was very kind and you could tell how big their hearts were. In our group meeting I got to tell everyone a little bit about myself and my reasons for wanting to come out and volunteer. The staff explained to everyone through this progress, the goal is to show the Haitian people that God and church can help strengthen the villages and…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
