I cannot forget about my 18th birthday. Because I celebrated my birthday by serving as a one-day volunteer for a charitable organization.
My day as a volunteer commenced as early as 7a.m.. I was one of the first to arrive at Dataran Borneo waiting to be joined by other volunteers. By 7.30a.m., I was surprised to see that so many people were willing to sacrifice their Sunday just to give back something back to the community. Half an hour later, a bus came to pick us up and we were all ready to serve the community.
Our first stop was at beach located by 45 minutes away. We went out to collect the rubbish on the beach. In less than an hour, we collected more than 13 bags of rubbish. I was particularly shocked to witness firsthand just how irresponsible some people could be. Nevertheless, I was glad to be able to contribute in my little way to help clean the beach.
Then, the bus took us to an orphanage in Sepang, the orphans were certainly hoping us as they woke up early to greet us at the entrance. As we got off the bus, it was truly disheartening to see the orphanage being in such a sorry state. We had donated some supplies to them. We could see the joy on their face as we loaded those supplies into their centre.
We spend about 3 hours at the orphanage and then we made our journey to the town and set up a booth. The booth was aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of giving back to the community. Those who were interested were asked to leave their contact details and they would be contacted via e-mails. We decided not to distribute fliers and brochures as we wanted to be more eco-friendly.
Joining the one-day mission as a volunteer was definitely something that I would be proud of. That satisfaction that I got was worth more than anything that money could buy. And this day was my unforgettable memories in my life.
