Although it provides a great opportunity for personal development, it’s a way of getting confidence and learning new skills or putting your existing skills to good use. In my experience, I noticed that whenever I volunteer I unawarenly learn so much about my true intentions. One time my friends and I volunteered to do a park clean-up because we all needed service hours for a school assignment. I remember towards the end of the day even though I was covered in dirt and sweat and also completely exhausted, I didn't seem to care. I was so focused on helping get the park clean I didn't mind all the pain and effort that would come from it; I completely lost all care for my own personal intentions and just wanted to make sure the park was clean. It made me think about how much I love helping my community and ended up completely forgetting about the services hours I needed. I learned from that experience more about myself than I ever expected and additionally my true intentions for volunteering. In the end, I didn't care about the service hours I achieve from volunteering, I was just proud that I helped the community out.…

I define volunteerism as the act of willingly and voluntarily doing things to help others when you get nothing tangible in return for efforts. This may be done for a number of reasons which should not include gaining publicity for the individual initiating the activity. It is humbling and rewarding to serve others. I believe one can benefit from volunteerism by growing their knowledge base about the activity in which they are participating in. Volunteering gives a sense of peace and enforces belief that we survive together as a community and not as individuals. It reminds me that we need each other more than we think and that without the kindness of others there would be no hope.…

I agree that it may be difficult to have the desire or feeling to help others if you have never really have taken the time out to volunteer. Although I do empathize with this concern I can’t say that I have never contributed any of my time to an organization or cause. I have enjoyed the action of volunteering and have contributed my time for years. I began volunteering in eighth grade as a summer youth camp counselor and from then I was hooked. For me volunteering brings a sense of purpose and new experiences, and each experience has shaped my mind differently. I feel that volunteering is very beneficial and should be something that everyone takes part of at least once in their life. Volunteering can teach teamwork, patience and most importantly perspective. These traits are essentially useful to a future successful social worker because they are great communicators, particularly when it comes to listening. I believe that most people do not like to volunteer because there is no financial gain involved for the individual. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun; but it is also intended to make contacts for possible employment. Others serve on an as-needed basis, such as in response to a natural…

I define volunteerism as the act of carrying out activities for the greater benefit of a community with little or no benefit to the party carrying out the action. Volunteerism may be done for a number of reasons but should not include to receive an income or to gain publicity for the individual or group initiating the activity. There are a few benefits that the initiating individuals have from carrying out a voluntary action such as: growing one’s knowledgebase about the activity in which they are part taking, social entrepreneurship, and networking or build a community in which one resides. As our life’s become more filled with work, family, and personal commitments, we tend to lose sight on our health, relationships and finances. Maybe this is our livelihood, but we need to make some time to think about, how can I make the surround I live in a better place for me and everyone else to live in? Looking at volunteerism from a historical and religious background, volunteerism dates back to the times of Jesus. Mathew 7:12 reads: Do unto others as you would want them do unto you. This incorporates from a little kind gesture of helping an old lady cross the street to a well planned wide scale “feed the poor” operation in some deprived country. Volunteering usually brings together like minded people who may come from diverse backgrounds and working with them, one may learn more about a culture that they would probably never get a chance to experience. Volunteerism, because it brings people together for one cause, to help others, usually involve many people working in a group setting to complete specific tasks and this may teach group dynamics, which is an essential skill to master for especially school and work because one will learn how different personalities may contribute to the desired outcome.…
