COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
a. What does community service/ volunteerism mean to you?
I define volunteerism as the act of willingly and voluntarily doing things to help others when you get nothing tangible in return for efforts. This may be done for a number of reasons which should not include gaining publicity for the individual initiating the activity. It is humbling and rewarding to serve others. I believe one can benefit from volunteerism by growing their knowledge base about the activity in which they are participating in. Volunteering gives a sense of peace and enforces belief that we survive together as a community and not as individuals. It reminds me that we need each other more than we think and that without the kindness of others there would be no hope.
Community service is the foundation of societies and cultures. Doing community service brings me joy, gives me purpose, and connects me with those in need. Volunteering usually brings people together who are working from various backgrounds. In working with these people, one may learn about a culture that they would perhaps never get a chance to experience. Volunteerism, because it brings people together for one cause, to help others, usually involve many people working in a group setting to complete specific tasks and this may teach group dynamics, which is essential to develop especially for the school and work environment because one will learn how different personalities may contribute to the desired end result.
Of course, we do not have the power to make life better for all, but we can make it better for at least one person and with such thought, we can make that one less person feel deprived of basic necessities of life that we all have the right to enjoy.

Volunteering anywhere can have a huge impact on not only the people and community you’re serving, but also the volunteer. I have experienced this firsthand through working with the Dallas Arboretum to help people enjoy the nature and navigate their way through the gardens. The biggest impact volunteering has had on me thus far is seeing how I can help benefit others. Whether I’m simply helping somebody find the restroom, bringing a smile to a child’s face, or seeing how much visitors are enjoying their stay, I get a sense of fulfillment and happiness knowing I have brought a memorable experience to these people. Volunteering has also inspired me to create artwork from my experiences there.…

Whether donating food or painting a house, it has allowed me to be extremely grateful and humble for my lifestyle because everybody is not as blessed as I am. It has allowed me to develop soft skills, and learn more about myself and my HBCU community. One of my greatest accomplishment in life was that I volunteered 1,000 hours in high school.…

Yes, volunteering teaches you social skills and it looks good on a resume, but none of that stuff matters if you don’t have a good character. Your character is something that you can’t get rid of, but you can change. Volunteering can change you into a more patient, loving, and smart individual. In the past I’ve volunteered for the Carl Perkins Center, which deals with children who have been abused. Working with these children showed me how blessed I am. It made me more thankful, for my parents and family members. I made it my job to make those children happier than they were when I walked in. By the time I left I was the one who was more affected. Those children didn’t care about worldly things; all they wanted was your attention. This showed me that the gift of time is sometimes the best gift a person can…

Community service does not have just one single meaning; it has many. Community service means something different to every person in the world. To me, community service means helping not only your community, but also your school, state and country. It means to be kind and caring to others, to help out those who are less fortunate then you. Community service is when you take time out of your life to do something that will better other people. Looking down the list of community service activities I have done, I thought one of them was the most significant one. I call it, “The Community Service in the Heart of Hurricane Sandy.”…
