Dallas Arboretum Personal Statement
Volunteering anywhere can have a huge impact on not only the people and community you’re serving, but also the volunteer. I have experienced this firsthand through working with the Dallas Arboretum to help people enjoy the nature and navigate their way through the gardens. The biggest impact volunteering has had on me thus far is seeing how I can help benefit others. Whether I’m simply helping somebody find the restroom, bringing a smile to a child’s face, or seeing how much visitors are enjoying their stay, I get a sense of fulfillment and happiness knowing I have brought a memorable experience to these people. Volunteering has also inspired me to create artwork from my experiences there. I have drawn many flowers and animals at the arboretum, but I’ve also been inspired to draw some of the happy faces of the children I have helped as well. Volunteering at The Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden also allowed me to educate children …show more content…
Everyone I have met at the arboretum thus far, both employees and visitors alike, has been incredibly kind and most of them quite affable. My experience helping the visitors at the arboretum has also allowed me to become a more outgoing and optimistic person. Before engaging in community service, I was somewhat shy and timid. However, by interacting with others in pleasant environment, whether it was a quick conversation with an elderly lady about the origin of the Twelve Days of Christmas or simply directing visiting parents to the nearest stroller station, I have been able to better engage in lively conversation. The social skills I have obtained through volunteering at the arboretum have been beneficial in making new connections with a diverse group of people and interviewing with potential employers or college

For instance, in the spring 2016 semester I volunteered with the American Red Cross and I encouraged other residents to volunteer as a community service program. Another program that I executed was titled, "Can you survive?" The program took place around Halloween, so I included a mysterious theme to make it more entertaining for residents. The program consisted of deadly scenarios (i.e. the zombie apocalypse and a plane crash) to teach residents how to effectively work together. This program, and several of the other educational programs I facilitated, let residents learn in a fun and educational setting. Through these programs I developed strong and amicable relationships with residents, which helped me to better assist them when they were…

Sometimes it isn’t easy trying to find the time to serve your community in the way it counts, but the action does not have to be world changing, it is the fact that someone’s life was impacted because of your work. Since I have been volunteering at the Adam’s County Regional Medical Center, I have learned some very valuable lessons. The most important one is that the smallest action could make someone’s day. There was one day I was waiting with a woman in the hallway while her husband was getting an x-ray. She continued to tell me everything that was happening in her life both the ups and the downs.…

Yet, the various organizations at Austin College sparked my interest, and slowly but surely I began to get involved. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I quickly learned that being involved in the Sherman community and Austin College’s organizations have become a vital part of my college experience. My experience in these short 7 months have taught me the value of service and being involved. When I performed service events in the past, it was to gain service hours and build up a résumé. Now I serve because helping others give me a genuinely great feeling. My involvement in organizations has helped me to develop character traits such as, integrity, leadership, and service, and other traits that simply cannot be taught in a classroom. I know that these everlasting seeds of integrity, service, and leadership will continue to flourish well beyond college.…

Before I went to school in Waconia, I went to school in Chaska, the city next to Waconia. Even though the two cities were right next to each other, it was still a significant move to me because I had to make all new friends. After only the first couple weeks, I found myself with buddies from a bunch of contrasting groups. It was really an eye opening experience to make a new group of friends from a completely different place than where I was before, because I showed myself that I can feel comfortable in almost any environment. One thing I can contribute to this community is my great open-mindedness. I think I am specifically skilled at working with others, and have a good understanding of what it is like to be different than those who surround me. The experiences I have went through also help me be very understanding and even compassionate to those who are diverse compared to myself or others. With all of these different types of diversity, I think I have learned how to collaborate and adjust to people who are different than…

Recently, in my changes and choices class everyone in my class had to do a passion project. In the process of creating our passion projects we had to choose somewhere we wanted to volunteer at that involved something we were passionate about. Our passion projects were based off of our individual interests and passions. I chose to volunteer at Creative Learning Center, a locally known daycare and preschool in DeWitt. I chose to volunteer at Creative Learning Center because I'm very passionate about people in general, but especially children because they always put a smile on my face. During my experience volunteering I really enjoyed the time I spent there with the children and staff, some of the things I got to experience while volunteering…

Volunteering in itself, has many benefits not only to a person’s health, but to the world. There are many types of volunteering opportunities that can benefit a community. Volunteering for an environmental group locally in a community is beneficial because it can have more lasting visible effects in the area as well as can help build stronger support relationships between people with common interests. Also it impacts the people in the area more emotionally compared to national volunteering. Volunteering locally for the environment can have longer lasting benefits such as, having more lasting visible effects, building stronger relationships, and having a bigger impact to people’s emotions in the community.…

It is always fun to know that you are helping a kid a fellow student learn, or in the food pantry’s case that you are helping others when they need it. Volunteering has also helped me become more adaptable because you can always experience something new and have to be able to keep up and roll with it. Volunteering teaches you to be more patient because you can get to know many different types of people and understand what their struggles are and how to work with different types of people too. I think my volunteering showcases my character the best, in that in order to work with people, like I have, you have to be patient and understanding of others and what they may need.…

I have had the opportunity to volunteer for the last several weeks. I had never really volunteered before, so I knew that this was my opportunity to do some community service to help others. I have found through the experience that I really like to volunteer, so in the near future I will probably volunteer on my own, rather than doing it for a class. Doing service projects is a great way to get involved with the community. There are always people and businesses looking for help, and it is usually easy to find a way to help. When I had to do volunteer services for psychology, I was excited because I had never really volunteered for a long period of time. It was very interesting, because it actually made me feel like a better person for helping someone in the community. I volunteered at the Manchester Church of the Brethren Preschool. I chose that place, because I am an education major, and I thought that it would help me be able to work with children. I love working with children every chance that I can. While I was volunteering/observing, I learned many things that involved psychology. Psychology obviously relates to human’s, so it was neat to put it into a different perspective, because I got to look at 4 and 5 year olds, to see how the subjects that we were recently discussing in class, pertained to them particularly. Children learn very quickly, at a young age so I had a great opportunity to see that first hand. It was neat to relate all of the things I learned in class, to the actual students I was observing.…

I distinctly remember the day, five years ago, when I told myself I should start volunteering. I was alone, in my room, and had been mindlessly staring staring at the computer for hours. Volunteering, I told myself out of nowhere, could be a way to finally break out of my shell, meet new people, and do something productive with my life. The very next day, I signed up to volunteer at the Festival St. Jean d’Ottawa with my school. During the festival, I was astounded by how much my help meant to the organisers and the difference it made the experience of the attendees.…
