Personal Narrative: My Experience At Radford University
I admit, I’ve always been a bit of an introvert. In high school, if there was an opportunity to lead, I hurried in the opposite direction. I avoided circumstances where I might fail or face discomfiture, and I particularly shunned events where I would have to interact with people I had never met before. Therefore, if you were to tell me back then that I would describe myself as ambitious, intellectually curious, and socially responsible, I would look at you dumbfounded. However, since leaving high school, certain experiences have led me to transform from a follower to a leader. Growing up, I struggled with math, needless to say, I was never encouraged to go into any type of occupation with a technical or quantitative background needed. My experience at Radford University gave me the capacity to develop a love of math and the confidence to pursue a career in analytics. The school was three hours from my home and none of my friends ended up attending there. At first, for an introvert like myself, this was a terrifying situation, however, this experience ultimately led to my development as a leader. To make friends, I became involved with the Radford University Ambassadors, a Student Alumni Association. My participation in this organization helped me become better experienced …show more content…
I was fortunate enough to have professors who encouraged participation and resources such as the disability resource office available. Understanding that it was all right to fail, that failure helped us learn, brought out my intellectual curiosity. That intellectual curiosity helped drive my ambition to succeed both academically and professionally. Sports Medicine allowed me my first foray into analytics, as a Business major at VCU, I found my passion for analytics, now I hope to turn that enthusiasm into a successful career through gaining a deeper knowledge of analytics at

I entered school in August of 2009 and did not focus on my studies. After just one year my GPA was a 1.376, because I did not have the drive that I had in high school to succeed. After a couple of years away from Texas Christian University, while attending a 2-year college, I realized what I wanted to do with my life, sparking the motivation I had been searching for. I then decided to return to TCU and fix my awful GPA, which I managed to do with hard work, determination, and appropriate priorities. After one year of nonstop studying and focus, I have managed to raise my GPA to a 2.777, removing myself from academic probation and qualifying for opportunities I was not eligible before. This was difficult for me because I also work part-time…

One day, while I was laying peacefully on my bed, my mother came in with a letter from Florida A&M University. I didn't really want to speculate anything because a few days before I received a letter from another college saying that I wasn't accepted. Nevertheless I was still excited when I opened it and even more so when I read that I had been accepted. So without much hesitation I packed up and headed to Tallahassee. When I arrived my mother and I took care of registration and a plethora of things you have to manage as a new student. After all the hassles of college registration were completed my mother departed for home and I was left by myself to attend college. What a great feeling! Little did I know what I had on store for the next day, my first in college.…

The event that I choose to follow summer fest was a simple and casual visit to the wellness and recreational center, fancy way of saying the gym. Upon my first ever visit to Florida International University I still remember at our freshmen orientation entering the gym and thinking to myself this seems like a place that I will be visiting often during my four year tenure at school. And boy was I right, the facility was clean and professional looking very much like a professional gym would appear, the staff where all kind and ready to assist you if help was ever necessary, something that I truly valued. I was extremely exited to take a spinning class at the FIU gym, I had only ever heard positive reviews and I was looking forward to the experience as well. Personally I am obsessed with fitness so any class, or activity is something that I love to experience which is what drove me to experience the class myself, and did, I love it. When I got out of that class I was sweating so much, I felt like I had gone on a run around the world and it so amazing, the instructor knew exactly what she was doing and had no problem helping you out if you needed it, the music was fun and exiting extremely up tempo. Overall I can only rave about the experience, it was positive and motivational. It has truly inspired me to no matter how stressed I may be I can always go down to the gym and relieve my stress while gaining a benefit as well.…

Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…
