Since then, voluntary service has played a significant role in my life and I have given my time to support countless initiatives in my school and around my community.

While volunteering enabled me to socialise more than I ever had, it also had the unintended consequence furthering my ethical, academic and professional development.

Through community service, I have been able to me to help others in the same manner as those who have assisted me. As an after school tutor, for example, I was able to help my younger peers succeed in subjects in which I would not have succeeded in without being helped. By becoming a “peer helper”, I was able to help incoming grade 7 and 8 students make the smooth and comfortable transition to high

Dedication, diligence, teamwork, and leadership are all skills I developed while assisting others or devoting myself to a cause. There is no doubt that the habits and work ethic I acquired while volunteering have had an important part in my academic

What it takes to be a contributing member in today’s society is a lot different from what it took to be one in previous generations. People have different expectations and requirements, and they must learn on their own to meet them. Although there is not a set way to learn these expectations and meet them, the importance of community involvement and volunteering is demonstrated by how it teaches us to both learn them and meet them. It teaches people how to give back. It gives people the opportunity to give back. And more importantly, it makes people a part of society.…

Being at a pivotal point in our lives, middle schoolers especially, are easily influenced. Citizen involvement and volunteerism not can only influence you, but also those around you, because I believe it is our civic duty. It is our responsibility to give back to our community, whether you’re leading or following, because as Edith Wharton once said, “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Volunteering starts with one person, a candle in the darkness, and eventually that light spreads until that once very small light, is being reflected in a hundred different ways.…
