The unit that I am preparing is to analyze Christopher and James Lincoln Collier’s (1974) My Brother Sam is Dead. My Brother Sam is Dead is set from 1775 to 1779 during a very volatile and complicated period of the American Revolution; it was not clear which side would win the war. As the story unfolds, the consequences of the war prove devastating to the Meeker family: the rebelliousness of Tim’s brother, Sam, and the pacifist politics of Tim’s father, Life, result in the ironic deaths of both men. Their deaths symbolize the atrocities and unfairness of war.…

The character of Mr. Heron was based off of a real person, William Heron. William Heron was a real person that was part of this time. He was a double agent pretending to support both sides, but was truly there to support the Patriots. Sure we know that now, but how did we figure this out for sure? The authors of My Brother Sam is Dead weren’t as clear as they could’ve been.…

During the American Revolution Soldiers weren’t the only ones who were at high risk of death. For example in the small town of Redding, Connecticut there was a variety of different opinions on war. Unlike like most happy stories and fairytales there was no good side, there might have been a good cause but no side was considered innocent. The Patriots were killing someone for a crime they did or looked like they were committing even if they were fighting for their side. The British were exaggerating situations to get a chance to execute a fellow loyalist or Patriot. In the book My Brother Sam is Dead by, James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier,…

After reading the book My Brother Sam is Dead, I realized the plot of the book wasn’t what I expected. Judging by the title, you’d think the book is about a guy named Sam, but it’s really about his brother, Tim. The story takes place during a period of war, and Tim, as the narrator, has to witness his father and brother disagree over which side they are on, the Loyalists or the Rebels. Disobeying his father, Sam goes to war to fight the Loyalists, and Tim is stuck at home worried about his brother, but also admires his brother for his bravery. The war had a huge effect on Tim’s personality. As the book goes on, Tim grows up due to the situations war put him through. Tim has grown up immensely throughout the book by gaining responsibilities,…

“Principle, Sam? You may know principle, Sam, but I know war.” (Collier and Collier 21). In the book My Brother Sam is Dead Mr. Meeker is Sam Meeker's father. They disagree on whether war is beneficial or just simply awful. The authors have Sam join the war and his father against the war. Mr. Meeker knows about the terrible things war does to people. First, war turns families against each other. If one is stuck in the middle of sides, like Tim, it can become a nasty place to be. Secondly, families from generations to generations fight and argue against each other. Also, when people get killed for no reason, it becomes shameful for people, and is gruesome. In My Brother Sam Is Dead, although both sides of war are shown, authors James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier ultimately argue that war is futile.…

War can be both positive and negative, depending on where you stand and what you stand for. During the Revolutionary War, there were Loyalists, Patriots, and those who were neutral, somewhere between the two opposing sides and living in the thirteen colonies. “Give me Liberty or give me death …” was famously spoken by patriots, but would it stand true? Patriots were believed to be fighting for freedom, equality, justice, liberty, representation, and the overall pursuit of happiness; while, Loyalists were those that were against the war and remained loyal to the crown. Loyalists thought the war to be brutal, avoidable, and only cause more trouble for many innocent lives. In My Brother Sam is Dead, Christopher and James Collier use the injustices and ironies of Ned, Sam, and Mr. Meeker’s death to influence Tim Meekers overall decision of neutrality regarding the American Revolution.…

Zachary Scott-Singley wrote an essay called “A Soldiers Thoughts”. His essay was based on his inner thoughts and questions, how he should and shouldn’t feel about war. Is war right or wrong? Are these people truly the enemy? What would you do to stay alive? I feel war leaves these questions open to discussion and defiantly can change based on the person and the involvement; but the work of war can change a person’s values and morals.…
