The unit that I am preparing is to analyze Christopher and James Lincoln Collier’s (1974) My Brother Sam is Dead. My Brother Sam is Dead is set from 1775 to 1779 during a very volatile and complicated period of the American Revolution; it was not clear which side would win the war. As the story unfolds, the consequences of the war prove devastating to the Meeker family: the rebelliousness of Tim’s brother, Sam, and the pacifist politics of Tim’s father, Life, result in the ironic deaths of both men. Their deaths symbolize the atrocities and unfairness of war.…

The character of Mr. Heron was based off of a real person, William Heron. William Heron was a real person that was part of this time. He was a double agent pretending to support both sides, but was truly there to support the Patriots. Sure we know that now, but how did we figure this out for sure? The authors of My Brother Sam is Dead weren’t as clear as they could’ve been.…

Patrick Henry’s argument on declaring independence on Great Britain and going to war was an inspiring speech that has shined a new light on the subject of whether to declare independence or stay loyal to a country that has done us more harm than good and has ultimately led me to become a rebel. I have become a rebel for two main reasons, our petitions that they have not noticed were an attempt at peace and the mistreatment from the last ten years. To start, petitions had not been productive whatsoever. When Britain had done something that had made us miserable, we decided to meet in the middle and make peace with Britain though petitions. Unfortunately Britain had ignored and disregarded us and our petitions, and instead, had sent us harm and…

Rise to Rebellion, by Jeff Shaara, is the first volume to Shaara's two-part chronicle of the entire American Revolution; starting with the events of the Boston Massacre in March of 1770 and ending with the signing of The Declaration of Independence in 1776. Shaara attempts to relate to us the events as if each character he focuses on is telling the reader the story directly. In attempting to do this Shaara provides us with personal experiences, thoughtful dialogue, and what the characters are thinking- but these must be thought of as fiction. Shaara included these to give the book more depth, not to be historically accurate to the last words of dialogue. For example, there is no way anyone can know for sure what the…

After reading the book My Brother Sam is Dead, I realized the plot of the book wasn’t what I expected. Judging by the title, you’d think the book is about a guy named Sam, but it’s really about his brother, Tim. The story takes place during a period of war, and Tim, as the narrator, has to witness his father and brother disagree over which side they are on, the Loyalists or the Rebels. Disobeying his father, Sam goes to war to fight the Loyalists, and Tim is stuck at home worried about his brother, but also admires his brother for his bravery. The war had a huge effect on Tim’s personality. As the book goes on, Tim grows up due to the situations war put him through. Tim has grown up immensely throughout the book by gaining responsibilities,…

In “The Patriot”, the tactics of war used by the British Army differ significantly from those used by the American rebels. The British based war and victory on honor. If a battle is not won properly, it might as well have not been won at all. Benjamin Martin, the leader of the rebels, identifies the pride of the British as their weakness. The American rebels based war on victory itself and concentrated their efforts in simply defeating the British. Their sole objective is to win; they did not have the luxury of being “civil” in their war tactics. This contrast is shown very well in several scenes from the movie.…
