Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

In the dictionary, character is defined as the aggregate of the features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing. This is what people look for in a person they read about in any kind of genre. There is no perfect character in a story. Every character has some kind of flaw in them that draws us in. This is called a tragic flaw. Tragic flaw is a flaw in the protagonist of a tragedy that brings the protagonist to their down fall. The tragic flaw is what causes the internal turmoil in our character in this particular story. In “Story of an Hour” (p.168-171) by Kate Chopin, the main character Louise Mallard suffers an internal turmoil when she finds out that her husband, Brently has just died. She first sees this as a huge upset then she realizes that she is now free of her husband, who she has never truly loved. Louise also had a heart condition so that “great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death.” (p.168) This is a major part of the story. At one point, the condition goes away. She realizes that her husband was part of the heart problem. Not only was the condition physical but also emotional. When she realizes that her husband has died she has a sense of being free physical but also emotional. She has conflicting emotions that she tells us about by her thoughts and actions rather then in dialogue. These are all traits that help us understand who Louise Mallard is and how she feels about the lost of her husband.…

“How would you guys feel about moving?” Those words both excited and frightened me. They were not surprising to hear, as there had been hints that it might happen for a long time, but I was still shocked. Leaving my home of twelve years, where I had gone through school, made friends, and grown up, was not going to be easy. At the same time, however, it represented new opportunities that I didn’t have in the suburbs of Dallas. I imagine that this was what Deo and the Lost Boys of Sudan felt as they journeyed to their new lives in America, but on a much lesser scale. As difficult as it was to move to rural Northwest Iowa, I cannot imagine the difficulty of immigrating to the United States from the war-torn parts of Africa. At the same time, through reading and watching their stories, I was able to relate somewhat because of my own experiences. I have realized as a result that I should…

Today, I woke up quite late because I was tired from Great America. I woke up around nine but stayed in bed until eleven. Dad didn’t wake up until eleven, so we skipped breakfast. We ate Yoshinoya for lunch because Dad had a coupon. To digest lunch better, Dad drove to Villa Montalvo to go hiking. The mountain was quite empty, but we didn’t hike up to the top. The forest area was very cold, so we hiked down to the sunny areas. We walked to the cactus garden and looked at the art. Our hiking trip was a small circle, since we circled back to the Dr. Seuss water sculpture. We left Villa Montalvo and went home. I finished the sixth book, The Fate of Ten, until realizing that there is a seventh book. I hope the seventh book has a more conclusive…

The small of blood and the screams of wounded men started to get louder and louder. Some of the kings body guards were telling him he should retreat, but he said no and stood his ground. It was not long before I was looking into the eyes of the Theban army. I was hopeful that we could still win due to the exhaustion of the Thebans in front of me, even though they still had a good 40 men left. I did not realize that during their fight with the block in front of us, they were getting help from the left side. I had never felt this scared in my life. Here I stand face to face with my enemy, being over powered by my enemy. They were not tired and they were ready to push even harder. We exchanged spear blows back and forth. I hide behind my shield thrusting my spear out at anything I could hit. I killed a few of them, but my shield and helmet were constantly being struck. It was to the point that I could hardly stand my ground. My whole body hurt from the blows I had been taking and the exhaustion of constant spear thrusts. It felt like hours of fighting, one or two Thebans would fall, but there would be 5 more behind them. They started to overtake us, I watched the…
